Most rocks with shrooms on now in the cube end of the big tank, all other rock and fish and creatures are either in the big tank or in a heated and flow provided tub on the floor, hopefully I can get a half day off work tomorrow to sort things.

Lol, I saw 55 liter and instantly, like an American, thought gallons. It's only 14.5 gallons. Way smaller than I was imagining, yet just as scary.

That’s sad to have a tank crash like that even more so it being your first marine tank. I’m happy you were able to salvage lr and inhabitants. I would say they are in great hands. ;):)

Captains log, supplemental.

Acros continuing to STN. Bonsai more than stag. I've decided to frag off some healthy pieces and hope they survive. I was able to get quite a few frags from the bonsai, two from the stag. They are on the rack and seem to be doing well. Time will tell. Noticed some small growth on the forest fire, but the green color has gotten a little pale. Orange polyps still bright and fluffy. Also still seeing slow growth on the hyacinth bird's nest. Color is good with white growth tips.

Max par where they are at is 250ish for 4 hours, but it's on acclimation mode so about 60% of that. I'm slowly working my lights up. I think this all started when I had to remove Maui. After that is when I noticed tissue death on the bonsai.

Then you'll be happy to know that I dosed a little bit of KNO3 last night. 10ml a little bit. I'll have to do some digging thru a really old thread to find what concentration the KNO3 is. Nitrates tested close to 3ppm last time. Maybe 3.5, I don't know those colors are close and it goes from 2 to 4. Tonight they test at 4ppm. Well, it's purple on the low range, and clear on the high range. Clear on high range suggests below 4ppm. It's in that funny area between ranges. Phosphates come out to 0.04ppm by the red sea test. I need more Hanna reagent. I just dosed another 20ml KNO3. I'm gonna wait a week or so before dosing any more because I remember from last time, when the nano was fallow, it took a few days to see the spike in NO3.

Fish got fed a double helping tonight. Two peas instead of one ;)

Also have to remember the Algae eats up NO3 and PO4 quicker than corals. I found to combat that, I added a bigger CUC. Eventually their will be a balance their and your CUC size will balance out the Algae growth.

Yes, low NO3 can also be a limiting factor in PO4 consumption. I wouldn't call 4ppm extremely low, but I've proven I can remove nitrates, let's see if we can get those phosphates down.

Additional CUC... I think that's about balanced itself now. The rocks are no longer fuzzy, and the cyano hasn't returned/spread since manual removal yesterday. That stuff popped up out of nowhere, quick. If we can maintain the display, and get everything to grow in the fuge, we'll be golden.

I think your po4 is fine .05 is ideal. Lower and chaeto may not grow.

I have a few theories on refugiums.

More PAR in the fuge means less algae in the DT. This extra PAR can be gained through spectrum, intensity, and/or distance.

No matter how much PAR we have in the fuge, we will still grow algae in the DT. We need to select and size a CuC to match the algae growth in the DT.

The CuC releases the nutrients from algae in the DT where it can be consumed in the fuge. If these nutrients aren't being released back into the system NO3 in the system will be very low.

The best way to maintain NO3 at healthy levels is to have a CuC that eats nearly all of the algae in the DT. Then by controlling the water flow and amount of algae in the fuge.

My CUC is currently devastating my DT algae... the only way I'm getting more par in the fuge is if we install a flux capicitor under there. That H380 is throwing off 2000 par in a grow spectrum.

Next week I'll be placing a fish order. This one should finish out my stock list, since I got rid of the predator eating my fish...

My H380 will grow some serious chaeto when my nutrients are up. My CuC was doing fine until I recently got a turf algae. I have an urchin coming tomorrow that should take care of that. Hoping that will allow my NO3 to go back above 4ppm.
