Today’s test results….they said the cycle isn’t complete yet. I purchased some more bacteria to add in the tank to aid the ammonia rise. They said no water changes yet. They suggest I start dosing calcium but I’m not mentally there yet. I rather be the weekly water change guy then have to dose to correct my numbers. Just trying to get the cycle complete.

What’s up, everyone? My name is George and I’m new to the saltwater side of fish tanks. I wanted to introduce myself, last time I was part of a forum was when I was 16 on goped motor scooters. I’m pretty excited to become a part of the community. I can’t wait to learn new things and share experiences together.

I current have a 25G Mini Reef (low tech) located in my restaurant. At home I have a Red Sea e260 with the sump upgrade and all Red Sea electronics and a Red Sea Desktop Peninsula.

I’ve always had tanks but I’ve never been brave enough to take on a saltwater reef tank but about 5 months ago I decided to jump in and here I am now.

First ever test , getting second one now. No water change, started with tap water out the hose. I’ve upped my salinity since this test

Avoid tap water at all cost and disregard Nitrites which are freshwater specific. I suspect you are using API kit which is known for false readings ad suggest taking a water sample to a store that does NOT use Api kits and have them test your ammonia and nitrates and compare readings- then you'll know where your levels truly are at

Welcome!

if I read correctly, you added bacteria before you added salt? If that's the case, it's no wonder cycle was delayed :)

Agreed with vetteguy, don't use tap water, especially if you intend to keep corals. invest once in a solid ro/di unit.

also don't dose calcium in a new tank that isn't even confirmed cycled, I'd take any other advice from that person with a grain of salt and double check answers here when in doubt.

Thank you, I’ve added bacteria twice after adding salt. I’m getting an ro/di soon. I’m going to get a new second opinion water test most probably tomorrow. Appreciate the help
