What do you love about acropora?

The colors and growth structure. They are the reef building corals.

Thanks! I noticed more coloration when I upgraded mine. I use the Jebao gyres.

For me it's because when mine die they usually do it over night. LPS and softies always go slow and cause me to fret over them trying to delay the inevitable.

For me it's a lot of things. Colors, structure, etc but my favorite thing is the measurable growth. It's amazing to me how fast some of my corals grow!

My thing is how challenging it is is very rewarding once successful. I’m still learning acros and how they act and still have a very challenging time. But the colors and the growth structure and the endless color combinations. Don’t have any colonies yet just frags.

I am fascinated by the process that a living organism builds such a hard skeleton. Sometimes depending on acro species, so hard that it is difficult to cut. I really like the thick dense growth form acros, mostly shallow water species, Spathulata, gemmifera, humilis, abro, and then other sps like Stylophora and pocillopora verrucosa.

Oddly enough, the smell!!!

There's just something about the scent that healthy acropora give off when exposed to air during water changes. :)

That is odd. I know the smell (might be the only coral where I can actually identify a distinct smell coming from the coral), but I personally can't stand it. I do love Acropora, but smell would not be on my list of reasons why!

For me, it's the varied textures and colors you get with them. I love the contrast between the hard, solid skeleton and the delicate polyps extending out. Polyp extension is my absolute favorite thing about acros... the movement of larger polyped corals (like Euphyllia) is nice, but nothing beats the subtle movement from a healthy acro colony.

Colors and the challenge! It keeps me very in tune with my tank… I’d be bored if I had a softie or LPs tank… I love when a new person gets there first acro and dives in because they pay much better attention to detail and their tank!

Because they drive me crazy, sometimes one or 2 bleach for no reason but the rest are thriving grrrrrrrr
