what is this acro doing?

The crabs will be small enough to live inside the bubble structure, do a search on gall crabs and I know there's at least a few decent pictorals out there showing a guy chopping open an acro to show you what they look like.
And you don't have to nessecarily add recently to have a new pest show up, as a reef matures organisms continue to spawn, propagate, etc, and a lot of these critters have very long larval stages. So say you put a piece of rock in that had spores, took a few weeks/month for the eggs/spores to develop, then you have a long larval stage, crab finally develops and begins to affect the coral, now you wait for the corals growth to show the effect. a 6 months timeline isn't bizzare in such a case.

Hey are you dosing iodide?? Also what kind of flow is it getting I have had this same tying on my acros and birdsnests
I adjusted the flow to more intense sporadic around the acro and lessened it around the birdsnest and the bubbly ends dissapered my friends tank this happened in and we associated it to iodine/iodide overdose he stopped dosing and increased flow and they went away also I'll not that I thought I should frag off one of the tips that this was happening to and it caused RTN for about 3/4 of the acro so I'd avoid that

yes started adout 2 months ago wow mabey iodide doing this? its right in front of a powerhead moving that now lets see what happins thanks

Make sure it's not a constant flow on it but I high flow area in your tank such as where 2 currents meet and yes iodide is used in one way to aid in the expansion of skeletal tissue expansion so the corals can have room for oxygen and bacterial pigments grow to gather light (I do believe, this is what I was to by a marine biologist professor at the college in my neighboring town)

broke off some of the tips last night have not seen crab or anything like that in the coral.move the power away from the coral see what happins in the next couple days. should i take it out an dip it to be sure?

Checked it out last night Its Eric Bornmans' book!! They are not bad pests just live inside the coral They will eat alot of pests and really help out the coral, just kinda bad looking!!
If you had cut the coral "Puff" open and had the Gall Crab you would have seen it. Maybe it is the flow affecting the tips. Time will tell!!

I had a green slimer that did that. The bubbles eventually popped and then the coral grew over it. I only had one little section though, not as much as yours. I didn't see anything unusual after it popped. It never happened again. I wrote mine off to an infection.

Coral Tissue Bubbles : At times, a coral may exhibit what appears to be bubble shaped voids under the corals tissue, its usually a damage induced reproductive strategy that (may) lead to a polyp bailout. It can simply be caused by stress (as with light shock from a change of lamps, increase in light, sudden use of carbon or water changes that drastically clarifies water, etc)... or it can be stimulated by a burn from another attacking coral.
