So I’ve had a 29gal mixed reef for about 5 years and I bought a house so I’m ready to upgrade. Planning on getting 190gal 60x24x30. What do you guys think the best wavemaker for a tank like that? Mixed reef some sps and deff torches and hammers too. Also what strength flow (got) do you think is sufficient for a tank like that? Just trying to pick some brains. Thanks!

If it were mine, I’d do an MP40 on each side and gyres along the rear. That’s basically my fav flow setup, but kinda depends what you’re keeping and where as well as your rockscape.

I was just thinking a few torches and hammers, maybe a frogspawn, then a couple birdsnests, gsp, maybe a couple of mushrooms. Rock work along the back wall up to the top

Two Octopulse 4’s, one on each side (in my experience quieter and more reliable than Ecotech stuff and stronger flow than MP40’s despite GPH ratings), maybe some smaller pumps on the back too if you want to go for more SPS.

I've always liked gyres on the big long tanks to move that swell cleanly back and forth.

I like gyres, but I’ve always had problems with them kicking up the sand on the bottom

Our glass boxes don't need that much flow. My pumps only run at 25% on an SPS dominant mixed reef.

The new models are MUCH more adjustable and easy to prevent that. I had same problem years ago.

You are going to get a lot of different opinions on this as all of our systems are different. Return flow, coral size, display size, and so forth. If you want to get an idea of what type of power heads work the video below isn't bad.

Just remember that what you set up today will more than likely change as your display ages. It isn't static.

Yeah I know, I was banking on a lot of opinions , I generally want to put corals along the back wall all the way up, (with enough space to get flow behind the rock) but I’m looking for multiple opinions…thank you
