When a fish gets too big, what do you do with it?

Years ago, I traded them in to an LFS as I did not have tank space.
I do now

Depends on the fish and situation! But either upgrade or rehome it to a local hobbyist. Now I would like to not think about how big my pufferfish Hewbie will get he’s so cute and little now.:pleading-face:

I haven't run into this yet, but my LFS takes in consignment fish that have either outgrown their tanks or need to be re-homed. All the consignment fish I've got have been fantastic purchases.

I’ll either trade them into the LFS or rehome them to local hobbyists. I have yet to run into this situation as whilst some of my fish are in the 6-7” range, they’re all rather tender in my 4’ tank.
It’s like with coral, when mine get too big I’ll start intentionally fragging them instead of taking the accidental frag every so often.

The Tang Police might bust me soon since the Sailfin, Naso, and Blue tangs are getting too big for a 3’ cube tank! It’s partly intentional to justify a mega tank one of these days. Wish me luck! ha

So true, I've been contemplating that idea for more than a year now. My personal problem: I don't have space in the current kitchen area for a bigger tank, unless I'm willing to do a complete kitchen remodel. However, I do have a massive, dedicated space in the garage that can support multiple huge tanks. Currently, the RS250 is down there. Additionally, it has a couch, fridge, microwave, TV, full shower, and gym equipment. I really don't need anything else! One potential challenge: the family might file a "Missing Persons" report since they will never see me again!

A divorce might cost more than a dream tank so that's been holding me back! :(

Jello, the Niger trigger in my 55g, has just about outgrown that tank and is going to be making the short commute into my 110g.
Not so much that he's gotten too large for the tank (though, he really has), however, he's gotten a bit too bossy for such a little tank and has kept my new dusky wrasse hiding in the sand for far too long.

I haven't had to rehome any due to size. I typically don't bring fish in that I know will outgrow my tanks. My vlamingi may have been one exception (my Gal really wanted it) but I lost it to velvet. Truth be told I probably would have set up a new tank. I have been wanting to step up to an 8ft x 30" tank anyway.

The answer is always upgrade and if you don’t plan on upgrading don’t buy that fish.

Ugh, this is a topic that I've been trying to avoid/deny lately. My naso tang is getting rather large (maybe 9") and as such, is likely going to start feeling pretty cramped in my 125 soon. She doesn't give me any reason to believe that there are any issues currently, but she's a big girl that's just getting bigger. So I suppose that a tank upgrade is in my future. My lfs is in the process of setting up a red sea 1000... it's a nice tank. The dimensions are just about perfect for the spot I have picked out for a larger tank, so I may go that route sometime this year.

Still have some homework to do, though. I've seen plenty of bad reviews on the red sea aquariums. In fact, the reason my lfs is setting up the new one is because the seams started splitting on the old one they had (not sure which model it was, but it was 6' long). My buddy that owns the lfs says that issue has been sorted out and that there shouldn't be any problems with the newer tanks and stands. I must admit, they are beautiful aquariums and I really like that it's basically turn key with the tank, stand, and sump(s) all included.

Edit: my answer to the question is that I upgrade to an appropriate tank, lol.

If I'm not mistaken, the red sea 1000 is fairly close to that at something like 265g.
