Thismorning I noticed a white mark on my melanarus wrasse and on close inspection it’s about 2mm deep and it got bigger overnight. Any ideas what it is? It’s not behaving any differently but it is eating algae but it’s always done that.

Sure looks like an injury. Wrasses are nervous Nellies and he could have darted against a rock, power head or something else in the tank. I can't tell from your pictures what kind of substrate (sand) do you have?

Agree he'll be fine as long as it doesn't get infected.

I agree with the above; my Pintail Fairy Wrasse has now shown up at least twice with small nicks on him with skin hanging off, once right near his mouth, and I know they are from him darting around and getting cut on rocks/corals; they heal over time. That gash looks pretty nasty, but if he is still eating and behaving normally, I would not worry too much and just keep and eye on him; he should heal fine.

Can’t remember the size but about 1-2mm sand. How would you reccomend preventing infection

Most of the time you don't have to do anything except keep good water conditions, feed well and observe. If the lesion seems to be not healing, expanding or getting red/raw then consider taking him out to treat with antibiotics.

Thanks for the advice
