Given I seem to be spending an inordinate amount of time here I thought it was high time I had my own build thread up and running. Whilst there is a hope this may prove interesting or useful to others (even as an example of what not to do), I also intend to use this as a way of tracking my progress. Questions, comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

So let's start. I'm a London based reefer. By profession I am a quant, this is fortunate as if I had to making a living working with my hands I would likely starve. This is my first aquarium and it's been wet since February. With a 6 month year old at home and remote work now being the norm, this has become a source of calm as much as a passionate.

Equipment:
  • Red Sea Reefer 250 v3
  • 2x Red Sea Reef LED 90
  • Red Sea RSK 300 skimmer
  • TMC Reef Pump 4000 DC
  • 2 x Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6040
  • H2Ocean Compact ATO
  • Red Sea DIY Lid
Below are a couple of quick shots of the setup. Note that I am fully aware just how horrific a mess this is. I am constantly shamed by seeing other peoples beautifuy plumbed and wired solutions. My hope is to find some kind of cupboard I can shove in the gap and try and at least hide some of it a bit. I am also massivley impressed every time I hear someone describe the red sea DIY lid kit as being easy...

Stocking:
The tank can be seen to be in its second iteration of stocking, unfortunatley I suffered a tank crash a few months back. Whilst this was heartbreaking, it was also the wake up call to get my act together and really look after the animals I was keeping with a significant amount of care.

Fish etc:
  • 2x Clowns (Picasso)
  • Lawnmower Blenny
  • Convict Blenny (Engineer Goby)
  • 2x Bangaii Cardinals
  • Firefish
  • 3x bubble tip anemone (tiny)
  • Peppermint Shrimp
  • Cleaner Shrimp
  • Assorted snails and hermits
Corals:
My coral choices would probably be seen as exceptionally dull by most. I am looking for east and stable for now. I will likely increase the number of torches over time and probably put a few nice show peices on the sand once things are more stable. I'm just not ready for SPS yet and not sure I wan't to go that route.
  • Green Xenia
  • Torch
  • Zoas
  • Toadstool
  • Kenya Tree

My current focus is almost entirely on stability. I am trying to leave as much alone as possible and just have 3 months of things growing out without anything going wrong. Over the past 8 months I have learned a whole lot. In retrospect I would have done a whole pile of things differently. However much I read up on before I started, much of this feels like knowledge that can only be gained by experience - this is experience I should have gained in freshwater, then FOWLER. Things are looking up now at least, my fish are happy, my zoas are spreading fast and my parameters seem solid.
