Hey guys I’m thinking about starting up a 20g long and want to see some inspiration pics! I’m going to use an xr15, some kind of HOB filter and Tampa bay live rock, undecided if I’m going to go bare bottom or live sand as well. Only thing I’m bummed about is heater will need to be in the display, even though I live in FL I keep my house pretty cool and tanks like to run under the 77-78* mark so I’ll have to stick one on the back glass. My current 40g tank is going through a bit of a rough patch I got hammered with GHA and I just can’t get rid of it and the Marco rock I used to start it up just will not develop so I’m excited to try some TBS and see the difference it makes. So anyways post up your pics I need some ideas!

Alright so I changed the thread name and I’m just going to start my build thread here. So first up question is HOB filtration, HOB overflow with another 20 long underneath as a sump, or canister filter? Obvious reasons for the sump is more water volume, and equipment housing. I’m not even sure I would add baffles. Probably just live rock, a skimmer and a return pump/heater. Thoughts??

Looks sweet! What are your plans with it?
No firm decision yet. I’ve thought about doing a 90 degree turn and sticking with easy sps and some encrusted unlike the big 90 I had recently that was lps dominant. Space being at a premium I have to make careful decisions. And I’m thinking of simplifying the aquascape by removing a few more small base rocks to open it up more.

After dealing with canister for several months in the 90 I’d say it’s doable but if you don’t have an AIO , I’d probably recommend a sump setup. Partly for flexibility . Like your idea for the sump pump, it’s a straight 1:1 for volume which gives breathing room for stocking , esp fish. By the way I highly recommend the Nero line of wavemakers from AI. I have a Nero 3 in my tank and it’s perfect. Depending on coral types you might want to go with 2 on opposite ends , esp if you want to Acros and such .

Yeah I think I’ll end up with a sump underneath it i just think in the long run it’ll be more ideal, not going to drill it though I think I’ll run an Eshopps HOB overflow. And yes I have a Nero 5 in my 40g, I purchased a Jebao for this tank I just didn’t want to drop $150 for a wave maker right off the bat

Well unfortunately this build will not be making it off the ground. I was really excited about it but I need to focus on my main tank and get it to a place where I’m happy with it and then either upgrade to a larger system or maybe then look into another nano.

Do you have pictures of your main tank?
