Sigh

Breath

1 week vacation with mother in law taking care of the tank every other day feeding fish semi heavy and dosing 5N and .02P

Tank dinos took over and had a high loss of Sps corals.

Others stressed...

Husbandry list:
Home at 1 am, up at 9. Vacuumed dinos from surfaces and corals for an hour.

Took out dead frags

Big glob of skimmate back into tank dosed.02p

Changed carbon

Dipped steveopora, I may be the first ever to kill it. Probationary period failure. May need to snip dead tissue tips.

Dipped some zoas looking bad

Cleaned skimmer, sump glass

Here's the cool part..... Maybe 30-45 later Began testing. 1.7N, 0P on Hannah uln

Dosed to 0.04P, 5N hopeful skimmate will help here too.

Main goal this month is focus on nutrients and getting rid of dinos again.

Meet with @F i s h y sometime in Jan for some rock to go in sump chambers. Mature rock is the diagnosis.

Always reward yourself with a beer when completed damage control. 3 hours work.

Zoas looking better opening up to nutrients and no dinos on them. Fish happy, nems happy, clam happy , anything that isn't Sps happy.

Dinos almost gone again.

1 day black out, 1 day 60% lights, now I'm back to full

Tank dirtied to 10N .1P

UV 24/7

H2O2 1ml per 10gal night

Thank you again @StatelineReefer for the Christmas/holiday of your choice gift. The dosers are going to be a game changer.

Finished the stand with some green paint from our front deck. Added leg stabilizers. It's ready for the display fuge when the time comes.

Next actual chore is going to be sniping dead tips and removing death.

All fish accounted, nems , clam

Sps was the biggest loss and 1 torch.

First a post update on dinos. Most of the infection is retreated.

Automatic dosing curiously given by @StatelineReefer is keeping things in check.

It's still a battle but not manually vaccing daily anymore.
Testing daily resumes. Feeding heavy. Throwing skimmate back in is still happening.

Today I added
40 lbs sand to the sump.
This took about an hour to clear mostly . I used a 5 micron sock and started a siphon to the sump. Mechanical filtration is a beast.

Some pictures of the zoas because they make me happy

Second a post on the stand for the future display refugium.

Will need light, plumbing , and a lot of macro algae. Planning to start with some nice live rock ordered from somewhere online. Looking for a neat piece or 2 nothing special. Want some encrusting sponges and stuff.

I need a couple more fish still I think before I jump in here. This stand now holds all the supplies and it takes up less floor footprint. $15 total . The boards were from a barn tear down.

Why not? Would love to hear
I am all about sand in the tank. Sand in the sump only cause problems. Any of the benifits are achieved in the the tank. So why complicate the issue? Control? You think you can control nature?

You chose to go bare bottom? Lol OK so now you will just keep the sand in the sump instead... Revolutionary.

Mud or sand, everyone wants it. They just choose their words appropriately to suit their narrative.

I do not subscribe.

I get it. I have some gnarly flow. Partly why I wanted no sand. I also wanted to encrust corals on the bottom.

I do see an issue with disturbing the sand in the sump or dealing with nutrient build up. But I am struggling with nutrients and paying for additives.

Was going to just add rock. But had the sand and figured why not.

Because it? ...
Because it did not produce the results that I thought that it would. I had a dsb with its own inverts and it was connected the the system. It had the same parameters as the rest of the system. Maybe it was not large enough. IDK.

Oo any bad pitfalls that you found having sand ?
