It's the pump only, so it will need some kind of controller.

The '2K pump only' is meant as an add-on for someone that already has a 2K and a controller. That way you would have a controller running 2 pumps.

FYI, BRS has the 2K + controller for 20% off. And they have the 'pump only' for 109.

I don't think you can plug the pump into an outlet, it looks like the cord ends in a 3 pin connector meant to connect to a controller

RC cars have 3 wires on their electronic speed controllers. would be an expensive DIY and you may just blow out the gyre. If you knew someone with a controller I bet there is a way to figure out the signals necessary to the pump.

Gyres- Look at Jebao CP series which is reasonable although cheap pumps Never last for me

I haven't had to replace a controller (yet, knock on wood salt over the shoulder spin around three times) but I did recently replace a power unit for one of my Jebao wavemakers. The original one lasted 5 years, and the replacement was less than $20. I can deal with that! lol

Have you looked at Tunze 6055? They are $200 (amazon right now), but one failure of a cheap pump and your right there. Tunze stuff lasts a LONG time and if they should happen to fail, then they have good warranties and a real, helpful human in the US to get you through it.

I have but I'm looking specifically for the bar gyre design as its nicer and seems to work for all my lfs

99% sure that the pumps themselves don't plug into the wall. I don't have one, but I'm willing to bet the controller itself plugs into the wall and the pumps get their power from the controller

Let me just offer that I have a Gyre and I hate it. The flow is too linear and all of my acropora grow in that direction if I turn it up too much. They move a lot of water, but are just too static for me. Other than in a super huge tank for supplemental flow, I will never likely use one again.

I will say that people have complained about having to clean them, failure rates and all of that, but mine has been reliable and I don't clean it hardly ever. It is a MaxSpect xf350, maybe? I have had no issues with reliability and stuff.

Just a general disclaimer, but please don't make decisions based on a LFS, vendor or some other commercial enterprise. They goal to turn and burn stuff is different from yours as a long-term keeper.

In all seriousness, not cheap but consider MP-10, 40, etc.

Factor in you'll have them for a decade or more.

Factor in cleaning is a breeze, just swap out wetsides.

Factor in low profile look with no cord in the tank...

Factor in broad, strong, adjustable flow..

They have a lot of value IMO...

I would say look at the used market, facebook. i just picked up a tank that came with 2 mp10s, 2 xr30s and all kinds of other things that i will sell off so I will have nothing into the equipment and fish and corals I will be keeping

reefbreeders has a wavemaker that looks like the nero 5 pump from AI. has a warranty of 18 months too.

I found the maxspect brand gyres to be garbage :) You pay a lot and get garbage :)

I imagine a person who doesn't have the $$ to spend.. if they bought one would be ticked when they find out they also need to spend $$ on part replacements. They are a pain to clean as well.

I can not speak of the jeabo or icecap versions.
