For the last month or two i had 3 frags Just completely die on me overnight. I mean, they were fine the night before and then i wake up the next moring and they are just complete White bone! I have also noticed the edges of some of my chalices were chewed on too. First one to get the blame was my purple Tang.. i patiently waited and finally caught him after a week.. Just when i thought it was over, i woke up yesturday to my Bazooka Joe all chewed up and 2 red hornet polyps gone!! Yes i notice everything in my tank..:tongue: So late last night i waited till about 3 hours after the light are off and used and really dim flashlight to see whats up!! i saw soooo many pods and they were all sizes. The flash light was really dim so they didn't scatter. They just went about doing what they were doing. What i saw made me soooooooo freak-en mad!! They were chewing on my chalices and i see them literally taking chink of meat of my chalices!! AAHHHH!!!!!!

I thought i was inhaling something really good from my neighbors Gothic druggie kids but i was right.. I goggled and found this

Killer Amphipods???

at least im not the only on that this happen to.

Just got back from the LFS and picked up 3 wrasse and 2 Maderin goby .. KILL KILL KILL KILL!

So if u find your chalices being chewed on .. maybe it could be PODS! BEWARE!! :xd:

I guess its my fault too cause i really dont like fish so i never had enough to control to pod poplulation and maybe i don't feed it enough that they went for my corals for food.

if it carries on for a longer time thatn what you wish there is one way to get them gone......INTERCEPTOR. but that would be the last straw i would say. youll get them all but then you could restock them with ones you really want in there.

I've heard of pod populations going nuts and attacking coral...if other nutrients are gone then they've gotta have food!

The wrasses and mandarins should put a quick stop to it Mike. Stinks that they were chewing on the good ones....Murphy's Law. Glad you were able to catch the culprit. I have a SPS dominated display and my frag tank is plumbed into the same system. I dose Interceptor once a year as a proactive treatment. I guess that helps me keep the "bad" ones in check. Just make sure you have a cover over your tank for the wrasses - they love to jump!

Very good write up Mike! Most people don't think amphipods eat corals but they def do. They can slowly eat up all your corals given enough time. How well do you think your biological controls are going to work? I feel like its unlikely that they really will be able to completely control your pests. I feel you on the fish thing, I'm not into them either. Take a look at my thread in the link below... I started it last night to discuss my coral aquaculture thoughts. I believe it holds a solution for problems like this. Elimintating live rock mediums in coral culture tanks and growing the corals on acrylic pedestals. Hope you don't mind me linking up your thread :) It just seems impossible with the methods currently used to completely control pests like amphipods. This is an alternative for people serious about growing coral.

Also, do you feed your corals regularly? Starved amphipods are more inclined to feed on corals.

I keep 1 wrasse per 25g just to keep pest in line and it has always kept my pods in line, sorry I didnt tell you that earlier Mike:tongue:

thanks craig!! yeah if they dont do the job ill try interceptor. I guess 1/2 a tab will nuke most of them ..

my yellow coris eats every small critter it sees and it is coral safe!

Sorry to say that amphipods are WAY too big for a Mandarin to eat, and wrasses are sleeping when they come out to munch your corals.

i hope the wrasses will do some damage.. my buddie told me to have a little night light and sometimes the wrasses stay up and hunt..

Not likely, wrasses generally go to sleep at a certain time, not necessarily when the lights go out. I have less of a problem now that I have more fish and feed the tank more often. I started out with only corals in my reef tank, and the amphipods grew to plague proportions. I saw them eating my acans and there was nothing I could do. I hate those things.

Thanks BRO!! i guess my quest to look for interceptor will start tomorrow

Keep in mind that pods are also in your tank to do a job....if a coral or corals are dying from something else then the pods will go in and eat because that's what they do.

Get a Arabian dotty back..."puesdochromis" spelling lol?????
They will take care of that tank in a hurry...
I watched my little guy eat a bristle worm bigger than him.... Mine is on the prowl day and night just tearing into anything that moves on the rocks....

Dang! I think I'm having the same problem?!? I had lots of paly's start to close up and dissapear off the frag plugs within days?! and it seem like only the paly's and PE?! it's been driving me crazy trying to figure this out, but I'm almost positive it's them! I have some big ones too. Now I'm gonna find some interceptor. Where do you get interceptor?

That sounds like a temp issue...is that staying steady? It's been a hot summer...
