Does anyone know or has anyone tried using real beach sand from a local beach? I know it would have to be cleaned real well but what do u guys think?

Too much likelyhood of introducing a parasite or disease. Maybe if you could get good quality sand out away from the mainstream, maybe.

When I started my first tank, I lived on Dauphin Island, Al. I went diving and brought sand back from about 30 miles offshore in 130' of water. It worked great. Since have moved away from the coast and just bought sand from the LFS. I think it was Carib-Sea.

beach sand from teh shoreline is def. not good, but if you go offshore like kingricky did, you could do it

i have read in places where people use play sand bought at home depot or lowes......4 bucks for a 50lb bag you cant beat it....maybe check that out

There are many diseases and contamination on the beaches, maybe you can't see it but when concentrated in your tank, it could be deadly.

it sounds so nice to go through the adventure of diving for your own sand! what makes it different from the sand on the shore, i still believe you can introduce parasites, pest and diseases equally.

are you serious??? we spend thousands on my corals but still can't pay for something like high quality sand????

Yeah i am just echoing beach sand as bad...too many contaminates from humans let alone that the beach is like one big protein skimmer....it where all the waste goes. Way off shore is fine but you still run a chance for parasites.

i use in my tank but first you have to dry out whit sun light(spreed in flat surface) to kill parasites then you have to clean whith clorox or bleach to remove the contaminates, let dry in the sun and wash whit osmosis whater a few time and use in the tank:nerd:remember clorox components disolve whit the sun light
