Beginner Filtration help

hello everyone,

I am brand new to the hobby and currently just doing my research before making any purchases. I hope to start a large fowlr tank (120g). I was considering starting with a canister filter and maybe eventually moving toward a sump. I realize the sump is prob the best option in terms of effectiveness but they seem very complex for a complete beginner. Do you foresee any problems using a cannister filter? Any advice or insight would be most appreciated. Thanks

Do a sump. A canaster filter on something of that size would be pretty much useless depending on how you plan to stock it. Just start it off right and be done with it.

First, welcome to R2R. I too feel it would be better to start on the right foot and go with a sump. I realize it can seem overwhelming but just take your time, keep doing your research, and you will discover it's not as complicated as you might be thinking it is.

This doesn't mean you can't make a canister work. However, in my opinion, you'll be thankful you went the sump route from the beginning.

Welcome, Nate!!! As long as you buy a drilled tank, there is nothing complicated about using a sump. If fact, it will make you life so much easier, especially with dosing, filtration, and water changes. Additionally, the extra water volume would help keep your system more stable. My advice is to find a reef club close to you and join it. In the local reef clubs, someone is always selling a tank or knows someone who is. That way you can find an already drilled tank and a sump. Plus, overall, reefers are good helpful people and someone would probably help you set up the tank.
