First let me say that I have been working with Humble Fish after a local marine biologist came to look at our tank. I just don’t want HF to have to keep answering my questions so I’m going to put this out there.back story

About five weeks ago, we picked up some Anthis from our local fish store. Put them in the tank after having them in the acclamation box fish started acting weird and not looking right in color so I treated with wreath medic at minimum dosage for 10 days, everybody was looking better.

But another 10 days goes by maybe less and the Marine biologist came in and the fish were flashing and wave surf maker surfing and they’ve been wave maker surfing for a while she reached out to humble fish she was local to us with him.

We are on day nine of treating with maximum dosage split between every six hours of reef medic. Fisher hanging in there still wave maker surfing video attached and a couple of pictures of our blue throat who hit for a couple of days

We are now setting up the hundred gallon pond in our office to treat the fish and

let the tank go follow.

We will be setting up with copper power my question is can we use a skimmer with it?

This is our fish list.

Niger trigger, blonde naso, harlequin tusk, 2 yellow tangs a purple tang, fox face, blue spot puffer, the anthis, 2 engineer gobies, yellow coris wrasse, possum wrasse, blue throat trigger (not eating) 3 chromis (1 not eating), flame angel, small spotted tang in the bristle tooth family (I can’t remember) and a file fish.

I dont see this as velvet but with flashing, may be flukes. You can however start with coppersafe and run skimmer with cup off at least first 7 days to prevent breaking down the bonders in coppersafe and run level at 2.25ppm monitored with a Hanna Brand Copper test kit for 30 days and change water and then apply prazi Pro for two seven day applications at 85% of recommended dosage applying once, lasting 7 days and do water change and apply one more application lasting 7 days

No, not flashing now this is just surfing. Feeding general cure with focus now. Will do a fresh water dip before putting them in the cooler power. Thank you.

Reef Medic is not going to be much help if any. Not likely Velvet or half your Fish would be gone by now. I agree with Vette that this may be Flukes. I would also say that this looks like a large Bioload for your Tank. Some of your fish are quite large. Also, do you run UV? With that Bioload, I would have a large unit running.

I don’t like to jump in on issues late, after other people have already weighed in, but right off the bat, do NOT mix General Cure and Focus! You need to measure oral medications carefully, but with General Cure, it contains two medications with two different oral doses, so it is impossible to dose it correctly! If you get one right, the other will be wrong!

Can you post a video of the fish, especially the trigger, close enough so that I can see their relative respiration rates?

I do have a large UV and it is 200g

They are not breathing as hard as they were a few days ago

Sorry, the video was too short for me to get a respiration rate. Generally, if a fish is breathing more than 100 beats per minute, that’s too fast. If you can get a ten second count, just multiply by 6.

Does the tank have good aeration, not just circulation? Tanks with lots of fish line this one often require supplemental aeration. A protein skimmer works for that if the tank has one.

That all said, I agree, this is most likely flukes.

Here is my post on dosing praziquantel:

Thanks, we are going to do a fresh water dip as well on the fish and treat with the copper power. We did hook up pump from a skimmer with an airline tube running from outside. When we put them in the copper that’s a lot of fish for the size tank that it is. So we are trying to mitigate everything that we can think of by adding the skimmer.

A couple comments that may sound negative, but not meant that way:

1. What made you think this was velvet.
2. You need to have a protocol in place (no matter whose or what it is) before you buy fish, rather than buying fish and then asking multiple questions as to how to fix a problem. It's very difficult to try to sort out diseases that are or may be partly treated.
3. All of your problems and issues could have been solved if you had a quarantine protocol (medicated) in place.

Many medications are not effective and as already mentioned, treating with multiple medication at the same time often add side effects onto a fish thats already sick. The best plan is usually to diagnose the fish and then stick with the treatment. I hope your fish are doing better by now. Can you review what your plans going forward would be? I would hope, since you're going to the trouble of separating your fish, etc that you do praziquantel and then copper per the protocol (normally it's the other way around). Additionally, I would not put live rock in your treatment tank as bacteria can rapidly degrade praziquantel, and also makes dosing copper more difficult.

Marine Biologist who consulted with Bobby Miller aka Humble Fish.

From my research wave maker surfing is primarily either velvet or flukes

Agreed, a mistake was made.

My question was about the skimmer. There was no plan to put live rock in the pond.

I had much longer answers typed out, but then I went back to look at my original post to confirm my answers and lost them all so and I’m not retyping them, but most of them are answered in the original post of what I’ve done Bobby did answer my question that I can use a skimmer, but need to watch my copper level.

I would stick with Bobby. I mean - why not. He is a widely followed fish disease commentator.

Update to the post. When we pulled the fish to treat we started with a fresh water dip. And flukes came off so we stopped the medic and are treating with Prazi. Everyone is still swimming and accounted for. We had an an angel that we believe has a secondary infection and we pulled them to a hospital tank.

Yep - that's Neobenedenia.

I don't see a lot of invertebrates in that tank. You might consider hyposalinity at 1.012 - that is a more reliable method for treating this species of fluke:
