Chalice vs Chalice questions

I know chalices "fight", but how do you know which ones?

Im making an "island" for some of my chalices and would this work.....all chalices with bubbly skin? Would jf sour apple fight with bubble gum monster or miami hurricane?

Depends on the species really... I've never been daring enough to try anything too crazy.. I know a snakeskin will kill a MH, and a PGW will kill a Tyree Pink.

My BGM and MH get along just fine. Just gotta be careful and you just never know. When they are closer together, they can sense that and will send out the sweepers to greet accordingly. Would hate to see you lose any prized chalices for the sake of an "island". That being said, it would be very cool. It's like Murphy's Law, the cheaper ones will always kill the expensive ones.....seems to always work that way. I think I saw a post from Peter and his Pink Bobbies is touching his MH and they are coexisting just fine.

I don't know if I would trust a write up on species vs. species (even if that exists - I've never seen it). I trust my own eyes and experiences when it comes to my prized chalices. It's just too much of a chance. I have most of my chalices very close together and they "sweep" each other all the time. There are others (no namers) that have killed a few and they have been banished to a corner of my frag tank. If someone can post a species vs. species article for all chalices, I would love to see it - just don't think it's out there....

Good article but still doesn't really answer the intial question....lol. Trial and error, my friend....trial and error. I would say if you have had pieces close by for a while, it would be fairly safe to assume they would be fine on the island. I would just be careful in my pairings though. I have bought "chalices" that have turned out to be more of a favia type (PPE) and vice versa. With all of the various types coming in to cash in on the boom, a lot of vendors are labelling anything as a chalice to get more money. Just be sure of the i.d. while building your chalice island. Best of luck - would love to see pics when you've created it! : )

Yea i guess ill just have to try and watch closely..

The bubble gum is already glued (5 eyes)....my chalice collection process is.......get frag, let it grow a eye that can easily be cut, frag that eye off, then never touch mother again, and use the frag to grow another mother, and sell of that colony...

Physophyllia corals according to my book.. are rarer than australomussa, it has the skeleton of a chalice but very very thick tissue...a hybrid or new genus.........I dont own any of these i just thought it was kinda interesting

Identifying coral to an exact species can be a greased pig chase. Even if you know that it's an Echinophyllia, that's an entire genus (not a species.) Just take it slow, wait and see how long the sweepers are and place them accordingly. If there's not enough room for that, it's time to upgrade. I've had had two corals be the same distance apart for years and then duke it out.

But that would be the boring way.... Even different species can be okay together sometimes (see link). I would bet money (frags) that BGM, MH, and sour apple would be fine. Btw, KLR, is that a purple urkle in your avatar or MH?

The tyree BGM is diffrent then the cornbread bubble gum. I dont see the point in this, i know i have spent thousands of dollars i would never "Test" a chalice to see how close it came. Two of mine where close one time, a Tyree pink watermelon and a JF war of the worlds and the war of the worlds took out about 6 eyes in about 6 hours of when i was at work. These two chalice's where next to eacchother for more then 4 months before the WOW hit the tyree pink in daylight. Those six eyes put me back about 6-7 months growth. Granted after it died i grew them back in about two months but still. Any chalice i pay real money for gets a few squars or some decent space to it's closest other coral.
