My LSF had this odd scrunched up coral (I figured it was a chili coral of some kind) in their softie tank that I had periodically eyed for several months seeing if it would open, they had no idea what it was since it never opened and said I could take it for $10. It sat in my tank for another 5 months in the same scrunched up position.

I moved to high flow and low areas as well as low light and no light areas. It never responded to anything, even my weekly reef roids. I decided last week to throw it in my sump in the empty filter cups that I have just to see what would happen. I looked in the cup today and it's 3 times it's size and all the polyps are out! Not sure what the difference was (flow, light, nutrients or all of the above) but if it continues to do well I may section off my refugium area to host it.

To me it is probably the flow and lighting - My chilli is in the darkest cave that gets very little flow and every night it is open, rarely open in the day but the reason why is because light gets into the cave and it reacts to it. It’s currently not opened for a while though and I don’t know why, maybe nutrients (It was doing great upside down in that cave for a good 6-7 months, recently closed up for some reason) but I guess I’ll wait for it to reopen, it was open when I fed the corals

@i cant think its too bad these beautiful corals require such elusive conditions...
It really is, my favourite coral in my tank is the chilli but I rarely see it unless feeding or a fish goes into the cave now that it has shrunk. When it used to double (Probably triple) in size I would never miss it and adored it so much

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
