So I have had my clowns with this file fish that I was told I needed my the store. I wake up no clowns. They disappeared!!! I'm ticked who else but the file fish! There should be fins or something around. He wasn't fat and those where big clowns. What happened? Mystery at our house.

I'm sorry that happened!

There's more than one kind of file fish, but are you talking about the popular Aptasia Eating File Fish, Acreichthys tomentosus:

If so, I've never known one of those file fish to be aggressive to other fish. I don't see a file fish killing and eating every trace of two clownfish overnight. Look at his mouth, he's not made to be a predator. Heck, he can't even out swim a Clown. I think maybe there's another explanation....

How old is this tank, what's your setup, and how did you cycle your tank? A pic of the tank would help.

EDIT: And why did your store tell you that you *need* a file fish? These fish will eat Aptasia anemones, but they also nip at some corals too, so not everyone *needs* a file fish, even if you have Aptasia.

Clownfish are fairly aggressive when threatened. I seriously doubt the file fish has done anything to them. Check the floor and look in your returns. I had mine work his way in there once.
Nothing.....They can't jump there is no way...no hole and let's say one did the other one did too? Nothing on the floor or back of tank. Nothing in the filter and impossible for them to get into it. Now I get one dying sure but two? I think I have a murder in the tank or one of you came and took them.

Do you have dogs or cats? If so might have eaten them if they jumped.

That's another story so I bought a live rock and the young guy gave me a rock full of hijackers. I even had a fire worm and almost lost it! Scat d the hell out of me it was five inches long and no he no longer is in my tank....sorry for those that like these things but want nothing posious in my tank. So he tells me I need this file fish to eat these two other hitchhiker's. I'm not happy. Now my tank is off so I can't get my coral. I've lost my beloved clowns and stuck with killer seen below who was once called ....lol.

Not saying you're wrong, but in my short time back in the reefkeeping world, one of the first things I realized is that "no way" and "impossible" are indeed possible.

Although possible, you likely did not have a fireworm, but a large bristle worm, which some think are creepy, but they can be a great part of your clean up crew.

I'm sorry about your experience with your LFS, maybe there's another store you can visit.

I really don't think that poor file fish is a "killer". I mean, just take a look at that picture, that fish is not built to be a predator.

Again, how old is this tank, how did you set it up and cycle it? Can you post a full pic of the tank setup please, it often helps a lot.

With the rock could you have got a Mantis hitchhiker ?
That would take out clowns easily
I took a pic at the time said fire worm. Scary as hell. I have to look that up thank you. That thing was out of the tank days before that.....it came out during the night was in the sand apparently.
