I'm running two gyre 230's, so I would disagree with your LFS. Each 230 goes from 10% to 40%, so I have room to increase at some point if needed. I had an MP10 on the reefer when I first set it up, I wasn't comfortable with the wet side and dry side magnets on the glass. Others have had success with the MP10 on the reefer tanks, so it is possible. I ran an MP40 on my reefer for awhile and I like the pump, I just feel like the gyre is a better pump for the short 3' tank. If you look at the rating the MP40 pushes more water than the gyre 230. I think your LFS is confused or they like the MP40's for personal reasons, and it's possible they want to sale you the MP40 because it is much more expensive.

You can have success with any pumps you decide. For me the wife flow coming out of the gyre on the short tank wins. You could probably get away with one gyre 230. It is also cheaper to buy the gyre pump with controller and then a second pump VS 1 MP40.

did you fix the noise problem with the gyre? is it apex ready? or i would just have to use the controller?

thank you for your advice!!

@jordimex I can't hear the pumps running at all now, I am very happy with them. To my knowledge they are not apex ready, if they are I wouldn't buy the module. I have them set the way I want and leave it alone. I do have the power plugged into an apex outlet so I can control the on/off status from my apex.

Awesome!!! I love having the apex, my setup is pretty simple. I like to keep as many things independent from the apex if possible. If my apex brain ever stopped working I would still have all of my equipment running. All personal preference!

Got my apex installed, and the ATO along with the custom ate res. also cleaned up all the wires which was a job in it self. OMG still have to get some wires hidden some more but space is at a premium under here. Before and after pics.

How you liking the gyres on the back glass?

I only have one on the back glass, I tried both and I didn't like it. The distance is much to short when the pump started pushing water. For now I like having one pushing water the length of the tank and the other pushing towards the front to create an even more "randomized" flow pattern!
