There are a lot of manganese recipes scattered around this forum with different stock concentrations and chemical compounds. I’ll try to have them all in this thread.

Manganese (II) Chloride Tetrahydrate.

“Let's suppose your target is 165 ng/L, which is a typical ocean value (it varies a lot). Triton uses a set point 10x higher.

100 gallons is 379 liters.

So a NSW value of 165 ng/L x 379 L = 62,535 ng (0.063 mg) in your tank.

Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is 28% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram (which contains 280 mg actual manganese) in 2.8 L fresh water. Manganese = 280 mg/2.8 L = 100 mg/l.

Thus you want 0.063 mg/100 mg/L = 0.00063 L or 0.6 mL added to the 100 gallon tank to match typical NSW levels.

Manganese Sulfate Tetrahydrate:

That product is 25% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 250 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 250 mg/L or 250 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 250 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 250 ug per 250 L or 1 ug/L.

Manganese sulfate monohydrate is a tiny bit more concentrated since it has slightly less water, but the recipe above works for both. The difference is insignificant.

Here’s the recipe for manganese gluconate by Randy:

Manganese gluconate is 12.4% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 124 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 124 mg/L or 124 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 100 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 124 ug per 100 L or 1.24 ug/L.

That’s the same compound I posted in the first post. You can use that. It’s Manganese (II) Chloride Tetrahydrate

What does gluconate turn into when dosed? Is it like a carbon dosing effect?

Yes, but miniscule. If you dose the full manganese NSW level at once (~0.2 ug/L) then you'd be dosing about 1.4 ug/L of gluconate, or ~500 ug/100 gallons which is about the same as 0.01 ml vinegar per 100 gallons. :)

My reason for picking it is that I want to combine it with ferrous gluconate, and I wanted to be sure that the manganese didn't pull the gluconate off the iron to put it on itself. I think it wouldn't anyway, but I wanted to be sure. It's one of the types of complexities that always leave me uncertain when folks ask about mixing trace element solutions.

I don’t like mixing anything with manganese if I can avoid it. It’s too unstable, and it’s easy enough to dose it alone IMO. :)

PSA: Keep manganese closed away from light and air. If the solution ever turns brown, toss it and make a new batch.

Yes, it's often a concern to mix things and I've not yet made any of these to test them out. Just have the bottles sitting around....

You either dose by hand or have infinite dosing heads!

Why did you choose Manganese (II) Chloride Tetrahydrate?

I am curious about the pros/cons of various options. I now see a pro for manganese gluconate, possible mixing with ferrous gluconate.

Any reasons to choose one vs another?
