DIY Manganese Recipe Library

@Randy Holmes-Farley I will be using the 25mg Manganese Gluconate from Amazon that you recommended (Amazon). Can I please get a recipe for this and dosing instructions for daily or weekly for my 140g please? Thank you!

Here’s the recipe for manganese gluconate by Randy:

Manganese gluconate is 12.4% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 124 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 124 mg/L or 124 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 100 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 124 ug per 100 L or 1.24 ug/L.

@Miami Reef Fantastic! Thank you!! Just to make sure it is in fact 12.4% by weight with the label saying 25%?

Just to make sure I have the dosing correct for a 140g tank: 100L=26.4g, so dosing 5.3ml would take care of business? Also, is that a daily dose? Thank you!

Can we have one for vanadium, selenium and Chromium? I am finding it hard to source the actual ingredients. I ended up buying Fauna Marin for now but would like to see those two up since they are pretty pricey from stores and not readily available.

I don't see anything about it being 25%.

It says a serving is 225 mg and contains 25 mg of manganese, which is 11.1% manganese, and probably is a rounding or moisture thing to put it below normal for manganese gluconate.

The daily dose requires one to determine how much you want to dose. It cannot just be calculated.

I think dosing a full NSW level once or twice a week is an ok plan. So is dosing more.

NSW varies a lot in manganese. Average ocean content is about 0.17 ug/L. Many companies and users recommend more, up to 1-2 ug/L.

Thus you want to dose an amount in that range over a few days to a week.

The recipe below would add 1.2 ug/L. I think a fine plan is to split that into 2 doses 3-4 days apart.

Excellent info! I will follow this recipe. Thank you so much!! So, just to clarify on the dosing, I would be dosing approx 2.65ml 3 days apart from each other?

That sounds like a fine plan to me.

Manganese Sulfate Tetrahydrate:

That product is 25% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 250 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 250 mg/L or 250 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 250 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 250 ug per 250 L or 1 ug/L.

Manganese sulfate monohydrate is a tiny bit more concentrated since it has slightly less water, but the recipe above works for both. The difference is insignificant.
