I'm building a 40 gallon sump for my 150 and was wondering if I really need bubble traps or if they're just a waste of time. The tank will be using a bean animal overflow so bubbles should be minimal. Planning on a simple design of 8" drain section, 19" skimmer/doser/reactor section, 9" return section, with just a 10" baffle for the drain section and a 9" baffle before the return section. Would this work?

Also run a Bean. Bubbles aren’t strictly secondary to your drains. High flow over a baffle with any sort of fall can create them, and that’s just one example of many. I personally wouldn’t run a sump without an under- over- under bubble trap.

from my skimmer i run an over under over bubble trap...

if i had to do it again i would just do an under over and gain the inch of space for my skimmer

I do a minimum of an over- under on the input to a sump.
Keep in mind that a sump based skimmer might add more bubbles too, so another over/under before the pump can be useful.
