What would cause a colony to die overnight that has been in a tank for at least 3 months? Was all white like the skin just melted off. Have done nothing different except for people came over that night and were looking at the tank. Tank is full of a lot of other corals, but nothing else has died yet. Tank is over a year old. Levels are all stable, was just a random hit. Temp is 80. Sg .025. Nothing stinging close, no predators, so am confused. Thanks.

How big was the colony? With RTN it's hard to pinpoint the cause. I had a nice size frag of Pink Lemonade for about 2 months and lost it. It was on a frag rack with 4 other acros and not touching any of them. It was fine when the lights went out and the next morning I woke up it was a white skeleton. Nothing changed in my tank and all; parameters were on the money. Parameters and predators are the first thing I would have checked so if you ruled them out. If people were over maybe somebody put there hand in the tank and had something on it but usually that would affect more of the other coral also. If you start to notice other coral stressed at all I would put some new carbon in and do a water change. If your other coral are doing fine then just keep an eye on the tank. You may never know what happened.

As well as the above posts; how many people did you have over? A local reefer hosted a meeting and afterwards his pH dropped. Too many people taking up all the O2 and leaving a bunch of CO2. Lower pH could have something to do with it.

The thing about the garf bonsai is that its extremely sensitive to changes. There are many things that could have set it off. The other thing about them is they will bleach out quick but not die. If its white it could still have polyps so don't go and throw it out yet. I have brought one back from pure white to a brilliant purple. It took a while but its doable.

Sombody must have hit the GARF purple bonsai master reset switch or something. Mine was always sensitive and would bleach then come back as luke experienced. Recently it kicked the bucket, though. Just up and bleached and it doesn't appear that it is coming back... grrrrr

Thanks for all the replies. My ca is 450, and dkh is 7.I know 7 is a little low, but never seems to afect health, just a little growth. Has been this way ever since the tank has been set up. All my caps, digi, milli seem great still along with all lps and softy's, but light has not come on yet. Was only 3 people over, 2 friends and one of their kids. I did not see anyone touch anything as they were just getting some frags. We have 6 or 7 other reef tanks, and a few othermisc tanks and no issues. First thing I thought was sabotage, but I really can not see that from them. The garf was about the size of a softball, and all the skin turned to muck, and all that is left is death. Fragged as much as i could after I notice 3/4 death, but all frags died as well. I have had garfs long before go great, then bad, then great, but never a over night death.

All I know is when I came home from work, I took a look and my jaw dropped in shock. I seen a bright with coral and was like oooo no. I was showing it off to anyone that came over on how sexy this garf was, guess it turned on me.
