Giant worm! What is this?

Ignorant newb here but I saw something similar in my tank recently and concluded it was some sort of larval form of a bristleworm, apparently they can break off a part of themselves and it turns into that or something? But not as big. Haven't seen it since, but it definitely freaked us out too.
