Wow, one of my daughter-in-laws is also an ICU RN. She works in the Covid ICU and I worry about her all the time. So far, she has done well. She also happens to be a germaphobe by nature, so hopefully that has helped! I'm so glad your step-daughter made it home, and my thanks (and hugs) to her for helping the cause! ;Joyful

I apologize for this long post in advance., but I'm so torn on what is right.

A sleepless night last night and got some very hard decisions to make today.
Tuesday our little dog got into my daughters bathroom garbage and ate some things he should not of. Then last night he would not eat and started throwing up and became lethargic . So off to the emergency vet we went at 9pm. Due to covid we had to stay out in the car and could not go in with him. X-rays confirmed he has a blockage, in his stomach and possibly in the intestines. Xray could not confirm if it has entered the intestines yet, may be just poop. He had to stay overnight and they started him on iv fluids.Three options as of now. 1 is he may pass it, but not likely at this point(this already cost us $1700 for xray and to stay the night), 2. endoscopic procedure (another $1900 on top of the $1700) where they go in from mouth and remove what is in the stomach and hope it has not entered intestines yet. 3 is if it has gone into intestines then major surgery is required. (another $3000) They called this morning and no change which means he did not pass any of it. They are doing more x-rays this morning to see if they can get a better look at where exactly the blockage is. Regular vets do not do either one of these procedures so have to stay with the specialist vets. Emergency vet here are outrageous on prices. At what point do we say that is too much to spend on an otherwise healthy 14 years old dog???? Do we put him down just because of the money it will cost to save his life for eating tampons? Do we spend the money on him knowing he has probably 2 to3 years of life left. We may spend all this money and he has complications and dies anyway. Coming up with the money is not a problem, but at what point is it too much?? Very difficult decisions to make!

Im sorry to hear.
If I can flat and straight up honest in opinion...…. If this was my daughter.... I would pay it to have her around 3 or more years. the dog however, you have to ask yourself (hopefully this makes sense to render a decision). . . . assuming 5 years left to live, will it develop: blindness, arthritis, hearing loss, etc. What will that too cost on top of this bill. If you intend on having a dog at home for another 10-15 years, I personally would swallow my decision, but yet invest money in a new puppy based on the amount you will spend tying the dog over a few more short years.
HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS, AND NOT ADD TO THE PAIN OF A DIFFICULT DECISION.

Thanks for the reply.
My daughter is going off to college in August and we are getting close to retirement age so we decided a couple years ago that from hear out when a pet passes we will not be getting any more. Want to travel some when retired and it is harder with pets.
As far as other health issues, he has had a few already. We say his is part cat and has nine lives. He has lived through an attack by a coyote 7 years ago, had 2 bladder stone surgeries now, and still going strong. I gotta he hopeful he will make it through this also.

So true about bills always coming in. That is a good way to look at it. We are not planning on setting up a go fund me page. The money isn't a problem, although that is a very large amount and we need to consider all options. But thanks for the offer and kindness. We are waiting to hear back from the vet and will make a decision on that update.

i cannot suggest what you ought to do. I emphathize with your predicament. I have put animals down before and have allowed them to pass. I will say that as my favorite chocolate Lab reached the twilight of his life he started to have problems. I needed to take a trip that could not be put off. I put him down before i went so that i would be the one to make the decision rather than take the chance that my sons would need to decide and take the required action. My pet, my responsibility to care for him. Please be kind to yourself whatever decision you make.

Yeah I can understand that. And would not hesitate in that situation. What I struggle with is that is is not a disease or old age aliment, but just something he shouldn't of eaten that will cost lots of money to fix but is totally fixable. Then I think of the amount of money I spend on my tank and think why would I think twice spending the money on my beloved dog.
We are waiting for the vet to call again with an update from the actual surgeon
and if he thinks the scope will work and not surgery we will go ahead and do it.

Thanks @ReefGrammie ! It's definitely nerve wracking for sure. I can't imagine the stress they operate under in that scenario. That germaphobe trait seems pretty common in that group lol

It was already beyond him pooping it out himself, too much in him.

Good news! Just go a call from the vet. It all stayed in his stomach so No surgery! They ending up doing the scope procedure and were able to remove it all from his stomach that way. Does not look like any was in the intestines and if some small amount made it there he will be able to pass it on his own. He is stating to wake up and we can go get him in a hour or so. Already replaced the wastebasket in my daughter's bathroom with one that has a lid so this can not happen again!
I am relieved and glad we spent the $3600 to save his life! It was well worth it in the end!
Thanks everyone for the support and kind words!

Wonderful!! Our husky had a severe case of pancreatitis about a month ago and we thought we would lose her. She's almost 9. It's such a devastating thing to deal with sickness in a beloved pet. So glad he will be okay!

LOL about the germaphobe trait! Our daughter-in-law can handle all the ICU stuff pretty well for the most part, but the heart-wrenching phone calls to families about their family member with Covid has been really tough for her.
