Hello, I rarely post on forums because I know how to use the search bar. I will try to be concise.
25 years of freshwater experience. I know water chemistry and already own a RODI system.
Recently decided to level up my hobby now that I'm a grown up. (38) FB marketplace is a gold mine of free and cheap tanks. The buy/sell/trade/rehome groups are also super cool. I started before there was any of this and only recently came out from under my Y2K rock.
Anywho, I have always wanted a saltwater setup and, put simply, could not afford it.

This brings us to my $400 setup I just scored last night.
It was only a 30 minute drive and the guy was super helpful.
He had to sell in a hurry because his landlord discovered it and no tanks allowed.
He said everything is a year old or less.

"Reef and macro algae setup, all soft corals, not drilled for sump"
55 Gallon pristine condition
2 Hydor wave makers/powerheads
Fluval FX4 w/ inline UV "full of good media"
Nicrew cheap reef light with fussy controller
Fluval "plant light for macro algae"
generic heater
established Live Rock and sand

Livestock: Juvenile Niger Trigger, Blue Hippo Tang, Blue spotted puffer, Lawnmower Blenny, Maroon clown, Chocolate chip starfish, Engineer goby, duncan coral, zoanthids, green star polyp, finger leather, sea lettuce, chaeto, red pom pom gracilaria

I know there are a lot of things wrong in this picture like the very bad hose. This was before I left for work this morning.

Questions:
1. He said the Niger trigger "wont get big, they grow slow", everything I read says otherwise.
2. I have it at 77 like he suggested
3. How do I keep sea lettuce from getting sucked into the wave maker / intake
4. Will this FX4 even be close to enough with this stocking?
5. Do I NEED a protein skimmer, when will I know? watching phosphate and nitrate levels?
6. Where do I position the wave makers and how much current?
7. How do I know if a coral is even alive?
8. He gave me frozen grocery store shrimp for the starfish and frozen mysis or brine shrimp I will check later.
9. How soon should I feed? I will message the guy to see exactly what he was doing.
10. This seems over stocked for a 55?
11. Are these lights ok for what I assume are "beginner corals?"
12. Im using his water and store bought sea water jugs until my replacement RO membrane comes, mine was worn out.
13. Should I even bother getting the new membrane for my 100GPD "express water "under sink rodi unit? it has the 3 gallon storage tank.
14. He forgot to include the refractomer and reccomended a new one anyway. Can I get by with a 10 dollar petsmart hydrometer or should I spring for the $30 petco refract?
15. Sorry for being so verbose. This is me trying

Welcome!!!
Be as verbose as you can, the more information the better for us to help!
A couple of notes! (Immediate thoughts)

- you have a chocolate starfish, get rid of it, or don't keep corals (imo, they eat corals)
- The Blue Hippo should go, too small of a tank.

ReeferDave , first off, Welcome to R2R. Please post a full shot including the stand of your Tank. From what I can see your Stand looks a little scary. Also, you should research your FW System. Do you have DI Resin in the system? It is the final stage in a RODI System. You stocking list will be a problem, and the Lawnmower Blenny needs Algae to survive. Also, I hate to say this, but that Tank is nowhere near a year old and may not even be cycled. An inexpensive Hydrometer will work for now.

I would not follow any advice from the person you bought it from. The set up is very cheap (sorry), overstocked with the wrong kind of fish, poor filtration, and I would bet you a bucket of salt they are leaving the hobby after one year because they likely lost a lot of livestock and couldn't keep anything alive successfully.

I would suggest to rehome the fish and give yourself time to build the tank up correctly. Saltwater is nothing like freshwater. You have a good base for what could be a great tank, but it if you keep it the way it is, you will also leave the hobby in a year.

It definitely needs a lot more rock before more fish or corals. The article provided by gumby above is a good starting point, it explains that rock is the foundation of the saltwater tank.

Unfortunately that light won't work for corals. As you see how pristine clean the tank is, the light is not even strong enough to grow any algae.

For salinity, get a good quality refractometer or a hanna digital tester.

Good luck.

Welcome to the hobby and forum!

Sorry to say, that’s a ripoff at $400. The livestock is completely wrong and setup for total disaster. Not all is lost though. You have a decent foundation to work with (you will hate the shallow front to back of a 55) but now is the time to get the knowledge and research done.

I would find a local store or hobbyist to take most of the fish since they won’t be okay long term anyway. That will give you some time to figure it out and make a plan going forward

I will take comprehensive photos and details tonight after work.
For the people telling me it's a cheap/wrong setup can you be more detailed than "that will never work" or "just give away all of your fish?"
Please either provide actual data/evidence or disclaim your statement as pure opinion.
Thank you for helping me and this looks like a cool community.
The profit motive is strong. So many of you have a lot of money. I know you may feel good about the stuff you bought and it works great. Explain to me why that item is the best/superior option. I want all the facts and then form my own opinion. This is a hobby, for fun. What makes it fun for me is the science.

Can you explain why? Why are you telling me I won't like 55 G tank, plenty of people like 55's guy. Why do I need a plan? FX4 and tank alone cost 400? How is that a rip off?

I would make a separate thread detailing what was included with your tank and the questions you have about the tank. You will get more responses vs this thread here ,as this thread will probably get bombarded with more "welcome to R2R" style responses! Try not to let the responses get to you. We are all just passionate about the hobby and want everyone to strive to have the best reef tanks possible!

Regarding the Blue Hippo/Niger Trigger, both recommended 180 gallon minimum :) 55 gallon won't cut it.
agreed with above, we're not trying to dissuade you, we want the best for the livestock and your reefing experience!
