I'm the proud father of a 21 year-old 125# transgender son named Oceanic. He was born a reef tank but thinks he is fresh-water...

Riddle me this...

How many 7/64th holes would you need to drill in a 1" sch-40 pvc (spray-bar) in order to match the flow-rate of its 4' gravity fed 1" ID (top-2-bottom) interior mounted (coast-2-coast) bulkhead with 2 inline 90's ?

Welcome to Reef2reef ! Got one of those "best dang tanks ever made", do ya! I had one of those Oceanic monsters back in the day, 6', 200 gallon. Took six full sized adult males to move it, HEAVY!, and built like a tank. (Pardon the pun)

Can you draw up a schematic of what you wanting to do? So we can give some input. Thanks

Welcome to R2R! Sorry but you lost me at "7" lol. The #reefsquad will be by shortly, along with the other great members here and I'm sure they will be able to lend you a hand. A drawing of what you are talking about will help greatly I'm sure!

I'm not sure I 100% follow, but can you drill some and test? Not sure you'll ever match it but as long as you have more than enough, it won't overflow.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Unfortunately, you will find this isn't as straight forward as you would like it to be. To figure this out you would need to know which pump you were going to use and the pressure that specific pump would supply at the spray bar. You could then calculate the effect each hole would have on that pressure based on the total area of that flow. You could model it as a single hole that you keep making larger until you get the flow rate you are looking for.

The problem is that once you get any slime or algae build up on the piping it will have a significant impact on the area of each hole and will reduce the flow rate much more than in a single larger hole.

Hope that makes sense.

The return pump is a Mag-9.5
I don't have my tank in the house yet. But I through in a pic of the stand and hood I just re-painted.
My sump is going to be converted so that the 2 spray bars will rain water over the mechanical filter media that will be in place of the bio-balls. I will be using a single Marine Pure block as a source of bio-filtration at least until I can get my reef established.
My protein skimmer and UV light will be added when I get my sister sump finished.
As of now. I have 9-7/64th inch holes drilled in each spray bar. I have a feeling I will need to add more.
My 2-1" bulkheads are mounted high on the glass, a few inchs below the brace/trim. One on each side.
