This frustrates me so much! I can't stand it. Why do some vendors jack up their prices so much? They go out and get a $30 colony from the wholesaler and sell it for $150+/frag. What's worse is the chalice market right now $1000/eye, are you kidding me? You bought that for $100/colony! It's like black friday when the wholesaler opens up, all the vendors bum rush to get "the best" stuff. They buy it cheap and sell it, yes even here, for lots more then they paid! WTBF? I expect nothing to come of this, not one price to drop, actually I expect this to get overlooked as another gripe thread and fellow R2R's to continue to pay these outlandish prices. Gripe done. Vendors pay a license fee i believe. Then you gotta look at the funds to keep their stores up and running. I don't blame them. I won't bash cause I'd be contradicting when I become a vendor :) (hoping to after college) think of it this way. Without them... this hobby wouldn't exist. Nothings meant to be fair in life unfortunately.

Well There are alot of things to consider.
First is supply and demand.
Secound, most of them paid shipping. So you got to through that into the mix.
Third, there is their bassic overhead - lights, water, chemicals, and more.
Finally, is the biggest comtrollable of all - payroll. Some venders have employees to pay. If they don't, then what is their time worth. They spend time fragging, answering emails and phone calls.

I know this sounds like I'm a vender, but I'm not. I just know what it take to make a profit. If they can't make a profit, then there is no reason for them to be a vendor.

Now having said that, I am shocked at some of the prices. If people keep buying then the prices will keep going up. So can you live without feeding you addiction? I would place my money on the safe bet and say most people can't.:smile:

Some vendors don't get to cherry pick and they order trans-shipped from wholesalers. If thats the case they pay around $200/ box just to get the box to L.A. or where ever the wholesaler is. Then the Wholesaler re-packs the box and ships it out to the vendor. Which costs another $100-150/box. BTW that doesn't include the cost of the corals INSIDE the boxes. Thats just the shipping fees. So I don't begrudge the vendors selling something for more than they pay for it. Oh yeah. If it arrives dead to them? They eat the cost not the wholesaler that sold it to them. Unlike if you got it DOA, the vendor would cover that $150 dollar coral..................

Well alot of goods points so far,but so far one of the
biggest things that drive up colony. and frag prices for
those insnely colored aussie corals we all love is the cities
permit that has to be paid for and this is not a cost picked up
by the wholesaler or trans shipper its billed to your lfs
before he can even think about an order.
And then your lfs has to mix his order of lps,sps and softies
the soft corals have to make up a minimum of 40% of
the order,I dont agree with the chalice prices but I can
tell you there paying alot more than $100.

I hate it as well but here is the main thing....if people continue to pay those prices they will continue to sell them for that! I don't blame them for getting as much out of the coral as they can but it can be controlled by simply not purchasing the coral at those crazy prices.

No they're not. That Tierra de Fuego acro...$30 was their price...our price well you know it. Wholesaler got mad and won't release anymore of them, thanks guys! Some do get pricey, the "super ultra." But come on! They could easily sell more if they appeal to the general public. But as stated earlier, as long as people continue to pay $400+ for a few eyes and people keep on complimenting on how cheap their prices are, this won't change. Maybe I'm not rich enough for this hobby. Guess I'll go mope with all the other guys who don't live near the coast.

I know some peeps who know some peeps, that's where I'm getting some numbers and stories from. Let's leave it at that.

why are you griping? it's not the vendors choice to tell people what to pay- it's the people buying it.


Stop complaining about what vendors do when it's the purchasers who dictate the pricing, not the vendors. I've yet to see a vendor force anyone to buy something that the person isn't willing to pay. Any argument beyond that is excessive- William of Occam's got this one covered quite nicely-


Or you could move to a communist/socialist country if you prefer price fixing?

I am a hobbyist first and have been for the last 15+ years and wanted to get better pricing on corals/livestock. Long story short, I decided to start getting into the biz and pass on the savings. Soon to find out from experience, not all vendors sell their corals @ 500-1000% ; I would say after all the fees and shipping *not cheap*. 2 out of 10 corals are good enough to have a decent mark up and the rest well sucks. So whose eating up the other 8 corals that can't sell that you already paid for? I for one sell them at cost or less or just donate them *FIF* Most hobbyist are use to paying the $35-$40 shipping thinking thats all it cost or even free if they spend $250+ not realizing the real shipping charges are $70-$120 per shipment overnight and the vendor is really paying the difference for spending a certain amount.

see thats the problem here is that while sure you have shipping costs and perhaps some cites fees(cites fees are not that much)
i dont complain about the prices, but im also not going to pay 100$ more because someone choses to stamp his name to a coral e.i. tyree!

Another thing to consider is things go wrong in shipping so there has to be a bit of a mark up to make up for dead loss.

huh?? what do you mean? Put your thoughts out- the only time Mods get well, "Moddy" is if the discussion turns mean-spirited or rude- by all means toss out your opinions man!
