Thanks for you time!

90 gallon tank, 48 x 18 x 24, mixed reef

Thinking of replacing my 2 tunze 6095 with 2 icecap gyre pumps. Would you recommend the 2k or the 4k? Suggestions on mounting them? so that the blow across the long dimension or the short dimension?

I am battling cyano currently - this is my last hope.

I use a pair of the icecap 2k in my 40 breeder (3' length), I run them at 60%, if I go higher than 70% then I start to hear the whine of the motor. So for that reason I would recommend the 4k's

I'm happy with my Reefwave 45, but just know they're all based on the same Maxspect design and will require frequent cleaning

They lose a lot of their push in the first month or two. When you clean them they'll blast your corals everywhere again. Repeat.

Depends a little on what you intend to have in the tank. LPS/softies, the 2k's are fine (I have two of them in my 6 footer). But if you want SPS you're going to need more flow IMO.

The flow is not going to remove cyano. It will help but it won’t eliminate it. Some of us learn to live with cyano. Good luck.

Edit: I am using 4x redsea wave 25’s in a 30x24x16. They are on “customized” random at 30%.

I would recommend you check out these options as well. Some folks have good luck with icecap equipment, others do not. 2x 2k pumps would likely be fine, but if you go with the 4k pumps you can run them at lower intensity, and so they will probably have better longevity.

Hygger: https://amzn.to/490g9Qe
Best bang for buck in my experience. Excellent blend of quality vs. budget.

Maxspect: https://amzn.to/3WKXTD4
VERY robust equipment, easy to use controller.

Tunze are great pumps as I run many.
Best bang for you dollars would to replace both with 2 Jebao MOW-22's. More flow than you will ever need.
You could add 2 MOW 16'S and keep running the 6095's or just run 2 16's.
I ran 6 powerheads in my old 120.
2 6095's on the back wall, 3 Tunze 6105's and a Jebao ow-40 with 2 on each end.
I run a 12w crossflow in a small 13g and it works well but it's my only experience with a gyre.

I'll be odd hobbyist out. Your cyano issues are not related to your Tunze pumps.

Since you asked about Gyres Maxspect are probably the best on the market. Controller, motor block speed, and depending on which models additional flow directors. Some kits include spare cages and blades which make forward, reverse, easier to implement while also making cleaning easier. You need to clean them regardless of what we, hobbyist, say. Frequency of course will vary.

I've used Maxspect XF280's, Icecap 4k, and Orbit 4's. I've also used Hydros Wave Engine LE with one of the Maxspect XF280's and the Icecap 4k. None of them compare to my Tunze power heads (6105). Out of the Gyres I prefer the Maxspect just because it has a better motor and kit options.

If I was in your shoes I would look at other things while keeping what I have and maybe address position and flow patterns. Also check to see if the model of Tunze you have is compatible with their ORCA which is due out later this year in the US. Gyres won't compete.

Thanks for all of the posts!

I've adjusted many things to try to eliminate the cyano. New and improved flow is last on the list.
