I wokeup this morning to find my Hammer Coral completley died out. It had this brownish stuff in shape of its polyps. I had it for 4 months and it was very healthy coral. All other corals are doing great. It was next to yellow leather toadstool coral. I checked it yesterday it was doing fine. Does hammer coral dies out in one night or u guys think it was stung? Any comments are aporeciated.

Thanks.

Brown slime is no good, make sure you have a lot of flow. If you see any trace of it on any other LPS, I'd probably give it a dip.

I would say it is from the leather either stinging it or chemical warfare from the leather. I have a hammer and frogspawn that I have taken to the brink of death from tank parameters years ago and they came back. It was never an overnight thing; it gradually happened over several days. Like PZ said adequate flow and running carbon will help combat it in the future if it is chemical. If it is the leather stinging it then you will have to relocate one or the other.

mines having problems too, I just tossed in some carbon and new phosphate media. I can still see the tiny hammers.

+1. I would agree with Paul. Leathers are notorious for chemical warfare. Aquarist experts advise to not even keep them with LPS corals like acans because leathers routinely excrete toxins that weaken or kill LPS that aren't even close to the coral.

Thanks for these and future comments. Right now i am rushing off to do 25% water change, because when i took it out the, some of the brownish stuff got seperated and spread into the tank. Hopefully, i will be able to contain some of the contemination.

yeah I would remove the leathers if possible. but leave the hammer skeleton in the tank tho in good flow, it might have a chance to re-populate itself. Like fungias that die out and then start sprouting babies on it's shell months after it dies.

Alright its official, the hammer coral died due to not having enough flow, i placed my frogspawn at the same location to check it out. It turns out it was not waving it used to, so i did some checking around the aquarium to see if all the power heads were where they supposed to be positioned, and sure enough one close to hammer corals got disoriented due to a water change a 5 days ago. Rest you guys can figure that out. Thanks for all the comments. Really appreciated it.

I am guessing it was/is brown jelly disease brown jelly disease - Google Search

Lazylivin, I think you might be pretty close here, because now my gonipora is under attack from this brown jelly disease. I have started the redslime treatment, its showing some progress, hopefully the time frame for Redslime is 48 hrs. I will definitley keep posting the result of the progress(if any). I have turned off my Skimmer and UV sterlizer for the redslime treatment to effectivley work. Also i have put gonipora in line of sight with my nano powerhead. So lets wait and sea.

A fresh water dip will help. 3-5 minutes then back under the powerhead. Repeat daily for 3 days.

Worked for my duncan and frogspawn when I got BJD.
