I will be adding nitrifying bacteria in the next few days after the haze has cleared sufficiently and I can turn the filter off to allow the bacteria to set up.

First off... Welcome to the Dark Side...

Why are you turning the filter off to cycle the tank? Absolutely leave the filter running as it needs to be infused with the bacterial colonies as well.

Update: Damsel is doing good and has claimed the cave as her own lol. 1-2 week into cycling we got beige diatoms in the sand bed, week 2-3 the appearance of red cyano, and green algae on the highest areas of rock, so we know nitrates are being produced and the tank is cycling woohoo. We added two snails for CUC (a Nassarius and Cerith). Today we made the mistake (I think) of adding a Sand Sifting Starfish. LFS guy said oh they're hardy, ugh I should've known better and I normally research like crazy before a purchase. I have already done a ~15% water change (4g in a 29g) at 1.5 weeks in. I will be doing another 10% water change today. The tank seems to be doing good and cycling well.

Any suggestions about the star? I probably should take it back since I don't want it starving in a newer tank. I could add more sand and try supplemental feeding. Anyone have luck with supplementally feeding a sand Sifting Starfish?
