Have you ever considered frag style shallow tanks for your aquaculture setup?

How do you take awesome pictures like those? The corals are awesome, but the picture is just ridiculously amazing.

Do you change your light for the pictures? If so, to what setting? Filters? Camera settings?

yes we have 5 shallow 40 gallons tanks. they are 48x12x12 .. i love these for the frags

i don't love them though for colonies... no specific reason i just find colonies grow better in the bigger tanks that create more random flow

A little different question though - since you are also a vendor , how do you select your corals ? Do you import directly from Indo or Australia ?
I guess it will be extremely difficult to narrow down to Tenuis only . Hence asking and wanting to know how you select your potential mother colonies ?

well a lot of the pics on the 1st post and some of the macros are taken by @MichaelVargasPhotography so i have to credit Michael vargas for his photos. However all the video that are posted are ones i have taken.. Also if you check my instagram sbbcorals all those shots are mostly taken by me. I use a samsung Galaxy s8 with the pro mode setting. i also use an aquirclip orange lens and take them using the radion lighting all blue schedule. For the s8 cellphone you have to make sure it has the old software as the phone auto upgrades itself to the new software that actually downgrades the phone.. stupid lol... you will know if you have the right software if you can take a pro-mode video. the new software doesn't have this feature. The trick is to go to a used cellphone store and get a phone with the old software but be carful because the moment the phone connects to the internet it will try and force an upgrade.. its tricky i have been through 4 phones already because they auto upgraded... it also does not help that the aquriclip is discontinued... this you will need to search for somebody who already has one and willing to sell one..

also see below that picture a screen shot of the cell phone showing me a red update its trying to force the update as i upload this pic .. you have to be really carful to avoid it and not click on the update

I had the pro mode on my S8+(hated the upgrade!), and now on my note 20 5g ultra. I also find when taking pictures of the tank, pro mode to be the cat's butt.

i don't import directly . we have built some good relationships with some wholesalers who cherry pick the orders from overseas. once it is in the usa we then pick from their stock. I mostly look for Tenuis. Its a very hard game because sadly enough most of the tenuis die off. If i get 100 Colonies maybe only 15 will live past the 6 months mark and only 7-10 will live past the 8 month mark. We try and hold them for 8-12 months minimum before releasing them back to the hobby as signature pieces. We only want to release the best and healthiest so to minimize the loss in a hobbiest tank.. its a game of survival of the fittest. When looking for mothers I look for the best coleratin as well as the healthiest Polyp Extension. I also try and look for unique growth patterns and shape within the coral. Its also crazy how much the coral can color up different in the tank from when it original comes in. I also have gotten some super browned out ones that have actually colored up to be the nicest ones. so its crazy its literally like a coral casino.. just never know what your going to get .. but you can do the math 100 colonies cost a lot of money LOL ( we are also paying top dollar to be 1st in line to cherry pick the best ones) so if only 7 survive that grouping out of 100 they need to pay for the whole lot... then out of the 7 that live maybe 2 or 3 are have no color.. they are just 1 color or never color up.. .this is why the end product result can get very pricey.....only a select few make it to signature release maybe 2% out of 100.. but this 2% is straight FIRE which makes it all worth the game to begin with LOL

I'd love to know too. I'm really interested in how the whole thing works with how collectors get the original colonies of high end coral. I'm not about to go and try to do it myself or anything like that, but it's very interesting and Im curious of basically every detail of how the coral gets from the ocean to the point where it's first frags are released for sale. Kinda like watching how it's made. I'm not about to open up a scissors factory, but find how they are made fascinating.

They all from all over whatever looks nice I grab. I dont care necessary where it is from.. I just want to find the best and color it up the best I can. I do find that indo tenuis color up the nicest

Thank you for the reply . Interesting observation about Indonesian tenuis coloring up nicely than any where else on an average. I have way too many questions but I shall stop now and let you carry on with the amazing show .

so funny my daily cellphone is the new samsung s20ultra also. The camera is terrible lol... the other s8 i have with the old software has a much better camera i don't know why the new phones are worst then the old ones.. i'm glad you feel my pain LOL

Curious if you have any tanks with MH to see if a lower die off rate. I've fully converted a few years ago to LED and believe you can get better color out of LED, but, I still believe the best for the corals is MH. If you haven't maybe you should try. Might be possible to save some of those and then slowly convert to LED.

I run all LED never ran MH.. it may be worth a test but i dont think its lighting that is killing them TBO

With as many as you buy and are losing, I'd give it a try on one small tank. I used to buy quite a few mari and wild colonies and never had that range of die off under MH. I love LED but I do think it is a bit harder to keep non tank raised acros under them. Your corals and colors are amazing, just thought it might help on acclimation to tank life for some colonies.
