I’m going to guess they’re all correct but here goes

So
I’m going to give the caustic soda a try
I guess it’s the same in powder or small balls if the weights the same?
I’m wanting to aim for a kh increase of .5 in a 380 ltr
Does anyone know how much hydroxide I’ll need for that ?

Thanks but I don’t have any idea how to use that

Randy’s highest ph boost recipe

Would I be right in thinking if I raise the kh with kalk the ph rise with crease demand and therefore not increase the kh value?

Partly. The consumption (both biological and nonbiological precipitation) will rise as the alk and pH rise, reducing the alk rise. The effect is much stronger at very high alk and pH.

For the people like me that suck at maths how much hydroxide will I need for an either .5kh or a .4 raise in ph ?
I run an 85 g total system. A 10ml dose of hydroxide adds 0.2 pH and adds .5 dkh.

I test regularly with Apex Trident so I am able to note down how much dosing affects my tank. This calculation is based on Randy's note:

At about 7 dKH and pH 8.1, adding 1.4 dKH instantly boosts pH by about 0.65 pH units, and it falls back from there as the tank pulls in CO2. If you spread that addition out, each boost is proportionally smaller, and the pH drops back after each one.

For Kalk, my dosing calculation is (at full saturation because I use a kalk stirrer):
100 ml = 0.02 pH increase, 0.05 dkH increase
1000 ml = .2 pH increase, .5 dkH increase

With that, I dose at night spread out the 1000-2000 ml to maintain pH. This is based on my tank size so your mileage may vary.

Currently I’m at 10.3 kh , think I did a kh dump when refilling and calibrating the afr the other day so I’ll wait a few days for it to come down before the experiment cos I’m already high but I’d still be interested to know my start dose

How much hydroxide is 10ml as stated

Part 2 - The Alkalinity and Sulfate Part
Dissolve 282.8 g of sodium hydroxide (=7.07 moles of sodium hydroxide to match the 3.535 moles of sodium carbonate in alkalinity) plus 68.7 g of sodium sulfate in enough water to make a total volume of one gallon. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS SOLUTION: IT HAS A pH ABOVE 14. Do not get it in your eyes or on your skin.

1 gallon water, 282.8 grams of sodium hydroxide into a glass container (because it can melt plastic). Stir until fully dissolved. Once it cools down, add to HPDE or glass dosing container. You dose this as you would with AFR. It's not a powder you just throw into the tank.
