hydroids

I found a starry mouthed nudibranch in my lfs. I researched it. Havnt bought it. Lol but in research it says they eat hydroids. Gave a few examples. But I was wondering if anyone knows how common hydroids are in the average reef aquarium. Or if buying this beautiful nudi would be a mistake. Either for lack of food or some other reason.

Would like to know as well. Have some red hydroids slowly taking over. It's a plague and nithing eats them.

They are really pretty. Supposed to eat hydroids. But I'm not sure I have enough to sustain the nudi. Or if its even plausable in an aquarium. The nudis look very similar to carnation coral. Red/white

I have also been battling hydroids for awhile and that's just a 10 gal tank. Making sure my work in progress is pest free from the get go. Anyway, I manually remove them with a tweezer... it is tedious... and it sucks. Would like to try other options like the nudi, but... will my corals be safe...

What I read said nothing about them eating coral. Just hydroids. But I would always recommend your own research. I'm pretty close to perfect but.... ;-)

When I went back to the LFS they had already sold the nudi. :-( Almost bought the wrong one not too long ago Looked like a starry mouth but turned out to be a coral eater. Glad I researched again before buying it .Hoping to find another starry mouth soon but haven't seen one yet

I have no idea or experience with hydroids, but maybe try hydrogen peroxide on them. Turn off your pumps and dose no more than 1ml per gal of tank volume directly on the hydroids per day. Worth a shot.

Finding the nudi(s) that eat hydroids is very difficult. I had hydroids take over my tank, over 4 different kinds. I tore down the system and I am starting over with with dry rock and everything is getting quarantined. Hydroids are very, very hard to battle because they are a distant cousin of corals. This means that to kill the hydroids, the coral would die too. Extreme things like bleach, strong concentration of vinegar, things like that will kill the hydroids, but again, semi obviously, the coral will die too. (Second page here has photos from my old system http://wamas.org/forums/topic/66892-redoing-my-90g-reef/). I talked to Dr. Ron Shimek about this extensively, he said I was screwed. Some, most people they just go away, but for some reason I was a great breeder of them.

Hydroids can be eradicated without any harm to coral. You just have to know who to talk to ;)
