It doesn't really have a routine. It is both photosynthetic and chemosynthetic so it will survive in light and/or nutrient rich conditions. What are your nitrate and phosphate levels?

I don't check them because the test wouldn't be accurate I'll try to test tonight once the cyano is gone (fingers crossed!) I did notice that there was light coming in through the sheet. So I guess that could be where they are growing from. I am ready to see my tank again!

Tonight is the night that I take the cover off and the light will turn on tomorrow. So I'll sneak a peek today and see how things are going. Try to give an update.

I don't know where I would put another powerhead. I have a closed loop pushing about 3000gph on the back wall, a mag 18 return pump, and two MP40's one on each side. unless I start to put them on the front glass i think I'm full.

Cyano Bacteria represents one of Earth's oldest and strongest organisms. Reality is it doesn't belong in the reef aquarium because not only is it unsightly but it can smother coral. That said, it is tough to eradicate. While depriving Cyano of light - something it needs to live and grow - is a method of getting rid of it, likely it will be unsuccessful long term. Coral needs light to grow just as Cyano does, so if you want a successful reef tank you need to get to the root of the problem. Phosphate can fuel cyano growth as can nitrate. I would start using a RO/DI unit for all your water changes and make up water if you are not already. These units remove all the compounds that cause Cyano Bacteria to grow. If worse comes to worse the only "Chemical" treatment I advise to eradicate cyano bacteria is Boyd's Chemi Clean. If you choose this route make sure to have your pumps running high but all filtration and UV Sterilization off. My guess is you are not currently using a UV as they can help with Cyano as well.

I do have an RODI. Do not have a UV. thanks for the info. At this point I have resigned to the idea of this not working completely, but it will give me a good jump start on getting rid of it.

I had this stuff starting and I added a second larger koralia and it seems to have doone the trick. Well also started GFO too.

Mine has always gone away after increasing flow that was way too low, less light and manual removal several times. Never had it bad enough that it was not easy to get rid of thank goodness. One good thing is I have seen it surround and smother aiptasia.

I agree with this. Try vacuuming it out of your sand bed and running a power head over your rocks to blow them off. If you go the chemi-clean route be sure to follow the directions to a "t" if you don't it can and will harm your corals. I'm speaking from experience.

If you have filter sock you need to put them in to catch all the crap you stir up blowing off the rock. Make sure to change it when the water clears.

I put a better light on my fuge were I keep the chaeto. Last night the t5 actually blew. :( so I ran to Wally world and snagged a clip on light until I can order an 18" t5. Hopefully once I get the fuge going in the right direction I'll be able to keep the chaeto out competing the other.

First, good luck! I have the same situation with cyano. Curious, where on Earth do you get an 18" T5? I can't find smaller than 24" :( My daughter has a hex that can't hold larger than 18" and can not afford LEDs. Thanks :)

Thanks for the heads up. Once it gets dark outside I am taking the blanket off of the tank to see what's going on. I'll then set the lights up to come on again in the morning.

Avoid using chemi clean if you can. Not only because if not used correctly you risk losing a lot more then you have, but also its only a temporary fix. Find the source of whats causing your issue and it will go away. I am not sure of anyone has asked yet but, have you tested your RO tds? I had this happen to me because of high tds and lost everything. Was a lesson learned.

Yes I have only had the RODI for 6 months and check it often. It is still at 0 TDS. I have all of the replacement media on hand to change everything except the membrane if needed. My tap water is 92 TDS so it may take a little longer to use up everything.

I think the cause was when we were at the hospital for 4 days. When I came home I saw it for the first time. So maybe someone fed the tank while I was gone (there were family members staying here)

And since I haven't been able to do water changes as often as I would like. But I feel it's still better than some and I am way over skimming with my asm g3.

I think that from time to time as hobbyists we allow ourselves to over think things at times....patience in this battle will go a long way. Im sure that it could have been some type of over feeding combined with a lot of light. I once went away for a weekend and had left enough food mixed and frozen together for my wife to feed the fish, she called late the first night to ask me why I had only left one day of food prepped. Needless to say she had fed the tank all the food at once. Remember that nothing good happens quickly in this hobby.
