Is it worth running multiple tanks or sticking to the one?

I see on here a lot of people who have multiple tanks they take care of, and also a lot of people who have just one. I am wondering do you prefer to have multiple tanks or just one tank to take care of? Curious to see what everyone says!

I've got six nanos currently. Planning on adding a 28g lowboy and a 20g fijicube plumbed together in my classroom.

IMO multiple small tanks is much more enjoyable than one big tank, I have a 6 gallon, 20 long, and 40 breeder running at the moment, previously i had a reefer 250 and reefer 350 and they were much less enjoyable maintenance wise.

I have multiple but all my tanks are extremely low maintenance

1.1 pico - almost zero work except cleaning glass a few times and refill the gravity ato. Everything photosynthetic, so I don’t even have to feed the tank. But occasionally I’ll give the torches a few pellets. Few small snails, 2 hermits, and 2 sexy shrimp


My 75g is very low maintenance, details are all in my tank page

I have a 15g waterbox, corals thriving but having major algae outbreak and needs some work

And I just bought a 83 gallon and will be setting that up soon

I like multiple tanks because they are all unique and have different purposes for me

Multiple tanks allow different creatures to be kept. It's also nice to be able to move things around if needed. I've had corals that are on the verge of death and I move them into a different system and they thrive. I also like to dabble in different reefing methods and couldn't do that with a single tank. The top down view of my 100g stock tank in the basement is becoming a favorite and was supposed to be temporary but I'm not sure now. I'm fortunate that my Gal isn't bothered by all the tanks. I guess she always knows where I'm at and what I'm doing lol.

Ive thought about this a lot. Id like multiple tanks. But, not multiple water changes/testing. So for me its either one tank or multiple tanks plumbed together, or a very crazy water change station set up.

This is a good thread. I only have 1 tank currently but would like more. I always thought I would want multiple tanks plumbed into one system for lower maintenance but an earlier poster, exnisstech, mentioned multiple systems which would give you the ability to employ different approaches and methods. This seems like a great Idea.

I have one. I used to have two marine tanks as well as a small fresh water. Too much to keep them all maintained with all the other things I like to spend my time on.

I would like to set up a small cold/cool water tank since I have the tank for it, but highly unlikely currently.

I’m addicted to FOWLR tanks….currently have 800,700,240,139, 55 &40. Will soon be selling the 240 and 55 and storing the 40 for future hospital/QT needs. Which will leave me with 800,700 and 139 as ongoing tanks. Might convert 139 to reef. Anyway multiple tanks all the way!

Keeping multiple systems, if possible, can be great for those unexpected events ex: new fish being bullied, new coral not happy, emergency situation to move livestock & coral into.

I have two, a 90 gal system and a 13 gal in the office.

I'd prefer to just have just one, but rehoming the fish is tricky.

1 tank would give me more time for other things in life.
