Talk Me Out Of It!

So I'm considering turning the whole system into what most would consider a frag tank.

I would consider it more of a "grow-out" tank where I can collect different coral over the course of the next year or two and let it grow out so I can put together a good looking display tank. I hate looking at my tank now and seeing a bunch of tiny frags on plugs and figure once they're all grown out they'll make for a better display.

I'd also like to get more involved in the local reefing community here in Los Angeles and start trading and sharing with others. I feel like the more we share what we have the more we'll end up with down the road. I'm sure you've all heard about that huge seed bank somewhere in a mountain (too lazy to look it up), someday when things go downhill (heaven forbid) we'll be the ones that can help repopulate.

If I go this route I would keep all of the sand in the tank as I plan to keep some mini-nems and ricordea (I still love em) and move all of the rock in the display to the sump. I'd probably remove the fuge from the sump and just put some rock down there to help with the biological filtration My main concern is not being able to fit enough rock into the sump, I definitely won't be able to fit it all.

What do you guys think? Really leaning towards doing this!

So far, so good. It's only been a couple of weeks so far and I'm not noticing any major differences yet. Had a minor issue with a couple sticks bleaching but they're all doing fine now and getting some color back.

Well, honestly, nobody cares much to look at the tank as it is because it's so new and I don't have many reefer friends. I do enjoy it myself but I find that I spend more time staring at the individual corals than I do the entire tank.

I'm not sure what you mean with the cash reference but my intent isn't to make money with the setup rather to give myself more room for coral than I could have with a normal reef setup. I see you're from Alaska, gonna stop by and check out your thread now!

i'll say it - don't do it!
your display looks very nice just give it time, in a year or two it will be phenomenal
corals do best when they start small and grow into the tank conditions, sps morph into a growth form that matches the flow and light of there specific spot and moving them is always a risky thing. your better off letting them grow where they are, instead of trying a growout and transfer

btw i really like the color that fixture puts off, and you captured it nicely in that pic

Decided to NOT convert the tank to a frag/grow-out tank, thank you guys for the input.

I have decided to move the tank to a different wall where I can utilize a closet behind it for the sump/equipment and an additional tank for frags / grow out.

Changed the scape around a little as well, pics to come tonight!

I agree, definitely a lot more room for my SPS and even the acans up front.

To get one decent shot of the wrasse I ended up taking about 30, always movin around so quick! I know I'm playing with fire, but no, I don't have a screen over the top. I just can't bring myself to do it.

Yeah, I'm planning on moving it out of our second bedroom to the living room as well so it's gotta be presentable. I'm hoping one day I don't find my friend on the floor or in my dog's mouth but I'm sure the day will come unfortunately.
