List the things that blew your mind at MACNA!

Ok, lets make a list of some of the biggest new inventions/thoughts/concepts we saw or learned about at MACNA. The list can be about cool new "stuff" that is coming available for the hobby, is available for the hobby, or just really neat "stuff" we saw. Of these things, do you think any of them have real promise for the future of the hobby? Try to keep the list somewhat short! :nerd:

1) LED lighting was really out in force at MACNA. Those of us that think that LED lighting can't be held up to other types of light may have to reconsider (I'm guilty of this). I just feel like it's too early in the "LED game" to determine how long these bulbs are good for/work properly for. I really think that LED lighting can put an end to all other lighting available in the hobby.

2) One thing I liked, which was introduced by "The Alternative Reef" was their magnetic frag racks/rocks. I think we've all seen the regular magnetic eggcrates but their magnetic rocks were a really cool idea and would make a tank's glass walls turn into a place for coral...really neat.

3) Even though any long-term success would be seemingly impossible, the Foster and Smith booth and their three tier tank was a real eye-catcher. Such an awesome tank.

4) Fragging was in force at MACNA and I'm glad that this is so popular now and I expect it to only get more and more popular in the future. It should help introduce new people to the hobby and it SHOULD help to drop the prices we're paying for coral once more competition arises. A few people had saws/dremels right there at MACNA and were ready to cut-to-order right there. I love how popular fragging has become.

3. The DFS three tiered tank was at MACNA in 2008 and it was cool then as well.

I live right down the road from fosters and smith. is the 3 tier tank you are talking about the really long like 150 maybe with 2 seperaters so it is really 3 tanks in 1? or something totally different. Do you have pictures?

they had the same tank at Macna in atlantic city except without the banghai cardinals. They had those leaf-fish (forget the exact name).

My list:

1. The Wild Papua New Guinea lecture given by Ret Talbot I really wish more people had been sitting in to see this lecture as it was great and very pertinent to the future of our hobby.

2. The Fiji Coral collapse and recovery lecture given by Bruce Carlson

i beleive so, i want there but i saw a day or 2 ago where soemone said they flow into each other, i would like to have a tank like this!

Loved the three tier tank as well! I also really liked the circle tank at ORA that also had the water flowing over the top!

Also, the Vitrea Nano Tanks were awesome!!! That just may be my future nano!

Yes the tiers overflow the glass edge on the top 2 tiers. Absolutely beautiful display.

I too was very impressed the the abundance of LED's. Marineland introduced their new Reef LED Light and even gave 100+ of them at the awards banquet.

The Alternative Reef has a lot of very natural looking options for holding your frags. Great looking stuff.

The raffle was very impressive..... you name it, it was in there!

But the most impressive thing at the show, other than the show it's self, was that Marineland donated the 300 gallon tank that was on display to a local high school for their science department and then is shipping the same deal to the winner. Hats off to Marineland & ORCA for making this possible.
