Ok i have been a long time member here.. I have had 10 gallons to 400 gallon systems.... I just took down my recently installed glass cages 310 ( my forever dream tank) due to not having the time and energy to dedicate to it along with being willing to spend 10-15k more on livestock... Build link here.

I LOVE having a tank in my house actually I cannot live without it. I have learned that tanks in my basement JUST DONT WORK i would rather have a 40 breeder in my family room than a 310 in my basement i never look at... I have always been under the impression that Sump tanks are the best and make life easier... I have only ever owned all in ones in my small office settings and my first tank was a jbj 32 that lasted 4 months before i upgraded to a 93 cube.

I NEED SUGGESTIONS

Topics I am looking to discuss :

Are all in one tanks good these days? I am sure they have evolved since 2009 when I started this journey.

What are the best brand all in ones to use that easily house support equipment such as skimmers etc..

Should I just do the worlds best reef tank a 40 breeder with a ghost overflow with a small sump and call it a day? ( 40 breeders have been my all time favorites )
I have also been looking at a planet 36x24x20 mega matrix and building a custom stand but I cannot run anything but an internal overflow on a 24" width and it eats a ton of internal space. so honestly i may be better off running a 18" wide with external overflow.... BUT DEPTH IS KING IN THE REEF TANK GAME !!

HELPPPP me keep it simple looking for advice on tanks both all in one or sump tank options nothing longer than 36" and wider than 24" Please reccommend brands as I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ALL THESE NEW BRANDS OF TANK KITS ECT.

Thanks in advance!

I actually just started a thread on this as I am considering converting my old 250g reef tank (now a dart frog enclosure) into an AIO setup.

Fiji Cube makes an AIO drop in that fits a 40 Breeder. Put it on the side so you don't lose depth front to back, just a little left to right instead. There are also peninsula systems from Fiji Cube and Innovative Marine that would work . Just turn them sideways. Looks awesome with the clear background as the tank looks bigger with no black wall ending the view

I actually built a Dino cube all in one 40 breeder insert wasn’t too bad honestly. Unsure if I’d rather have that of a purpose built AIO I have also thought of the “penninsula “ build also

Sump. Always. Maybe if you have a little more space, like in that size. Maybe it would be better. I have never had an aio type set up. I have had just a tank with things hanging off and didn't have expectations of that clean look of the aio. I have a 5gallon aio for the past 4 months or so, that I thought I bought and thought I would love because how 'clean' they tend to look. I have so much junk hanging in the back space that it looks so cluttered now. I an have added external 1 gallon refugium and another 1 gallon rock/pod house. I tried a hob tiny skimmer but I forgot how loud a skimmer can be when it is not hidden under a stand. That constant shhhhhhh sound that comes from them was too much for me to deal with sitting on my desk 3 feet away from me.

It’s a 5 gallon tank. Run a heater and 1 pump. You don’t need anything else. 1 gallon water change once a week is super simple and will do everything you need
