Looking for a starting point on adding iodine in reef tank. Currently using Lugols solution.

I don’t know that I would add that much iodine at once personally. Have you looked at ReefMoonshiners? They have an iodine solution and what may be some more stretched out dosing options that would raise it slowly.

Have not done much research I went to LFS all they have is lugols solution. Trying to just see how many drops to add.

I am not that familiar with Lugol’s as I have only used it only once or twice. Do they give you any information on the concentration in the bottle that you can post? And how large is your tank? That could help with calculating how much you need to add.

I would recommend spreading it out over a few more days though. Some items it’s ok with increasing it in a short amount of time, iodine though I would recommend increasing it more slowly.

The icp. What iodine solution are they basing this on?
Normally there is some info about how much ppm there is in a certain amount in 100 liters.
That way you can covert that to you own.
You can also look for what your value is. Pick a desired value and calulate that foe the solution you bought.

The information is literally on the website of brightwell aquatics.

Instructions and Guidelines for use in the aquarium
Note: Lugol's has been manufactured in two strengths and was changed recently due to government regulations. The strength you have may be different than that below. Your label will reflect the strength you have. Determine the iodine concentration in the aquarium using an accurate test kit before supplementing. Each ml of Brightwell Aquatics Lugol’s will increase the concentration of iodine (“”) in 1 US-gallon (3.785 L) of water by 12 ppm, or approximately 0.6 ppm per drop. EZ Calculations for use in the aquarium: Multiply tank capacity in gallons x ppm increase desired x .07570 = ml of product to add. Example to raise the concentration of iodine in a 100 gallon aquarium by .02 ppm, the calculation is: 100 x .02 x .07570 = 0.15 ml. To get the number of drops required, multiply this number by 20, so this would be 0.15 ml * 20 = 3 drops. (a dropperful is 1 ml or 20 drops).

I’m not a fan of Lugols. It is unnatural will interact with many trace elements and change their chemical form and bioavailability. I suspect they may be why some folks claim a benefit of iodine dosing,,which I’m also not convinced is useful,

That said, if you want to dose iodine, I’d recommend iodide. You can certainly boost it to natural levels instant with no concern. It is harder to give advice on how often and how much to add
Going forward, but I’d recommend a natural seawater amount once a week is a reasonable experiment.
