Are neodymium magnets reef safe? I'm thinking of doing a small DIY project to make some frag racks since my racks keep falling with the weight of my corals.

Will these magnets release any bad particles or even rust? How many magnets would I need to hold about 20 frag plugs / 5-10 frag disks for the chalices?

i think there is a reason for the most part why people cover them with a rasin or epoxy. you might want to look into that.

Yeah, don't put neo magnets in your tank. I've never been brave enough to try so I can't tell ya what happens... but if you want to find out, let me know. :)

I've found that using ceramic magnets on the inside of the tank, and neos on the outside seems to work well. Made a couple extras if you want to try em out:

I made my frag racks by supergluing eggcrate directly to an old mag-float cleaner that the pads didn't work on any more. I used the smallest mag-float, and it easily holds a rack that will hold 10 to 15 frag plugs.

I found epoxy coated magnets last year.After playing with the idea of making a rack I just bought one online.

IMO, the epoxy coated magnets I've found don't have enough epoxy coating to really last very long in saltwater

i tried the magfloat method but the white egg crates tend to get algae and start to cover the entire magfloat w/ alage

I didn't say that.

The magnets that are sold as epoxy coated magnets, atleast the ones I have found, don't have enough epoxy on them to last very long in saltwater.
I've made a few frag racks and what I do is encase the inside magnets in casting resin, that does make them safe.

Blackrock reef sells the best frag racks in the market today. They are durable, have NICE magnets, are black, and easily washed.

I tried the to soak high powered magnets joann fabricks sell but after all the time and money i waisted .I glued a few to old mag floats and then just ordered some clean ones from eshopps. The acrylic works and looks better then egg crate.
