I have a mandy pair, that I've had for probably 3+ years old now. The female is as active as ever, but I'm starting to notice that the large male "rests" a lot during the day. He'll stay in one spot for 30 mins before resuming hunting for pods. IME; this is very unusual behavior for a mandarin.

Of course, I have no way of knowing for sure how old he is. He was pretty large when I got him, so it might be old age. I've read they can live 5-7 years in captivity, with 3-4 years being somewhat the "norm" if they don't starve to death first.

I have plenty of pods in my tank. He doesn't look skinny at all. Haven't noticed any fish acting aggressively towards him. Thoughts?

I had a large Mandy for awhile that did the same before the heater crapped and it died. He got so fat and lazy it was amazing. Cool because he would sit in one spot and flutter his fins occasionally. Beautiful fish.

My smaller mandarins have always been more active. My target never stops moving it seems like!
