Moving UP !!

Im a new member from North West Alabama. I have been a fresh water tank guy off and on all my life. I just purchased a USED 75 gallon reefer, complete set up from a co-worker and now im making arrangements for the big move. I picked up two 40 gallon plastic drums at the local Co-op to move the water, along with the tank. There are several nice fish, crabs, snails, live rocks, anemone, etc. If anyone has any suggestions on THE BIG MOVE, please feel free to advise.

Looking foward to suggestions and hanging out at R2R.... :smile:

The move is across town, about 10 miles or so. The barrels have screw on tops, so I can drop a pump in to move the water. I plan on using platic bags to move the fish and other critters. I will take some large plastic containers along too.

welcome to reef2reef.com I do not envy you at all. moving a tank is extremely stressful or at least it was for me. I suggest writing down a plan of attack and you'll probably have to re write it a couple times. plan for mistake and have extra fresh salt water ready to go. leave your self plenty of time in the day for this move and good luck!

that looks like a pretty good set up, not sure if I would move the sand, and dump it back in when you re-set it up, if it has been set up for a while, sand loaded with a lot of detris could start the cycle process over, I would save it, but concentrat on keeping the fish in there bucket of water, and putting the live rock in buckets of water, getting them moved and set up, have a extra bucket of salt water ready when you go to set it back up, take each piece of live rock and dunk / swish it around in the salt water to remove some of the loose detris. before putting it back into the display.

Thanks Sprnkler Dude.. I can use all the advise I can get.. and by the way, St. Clair county is only about 2 hours away :bigsmile: The tank and setup is less than a year old. The guy that im getting it from says he has been in the hobby over 10 years, so I hope I can get a lot of support from him.

What part of St. Clair county are you in. I use to live in Moody, and I have a brother in Pell City.

Moving Blankets
pcs. of 4x4 to set tank on
Stress Coat

pick up / 5x10 utility trailer / hand trucks with straps

I'd suggest having a friend or two to help in case you haven't already arranged that and not just for lifting the tank itself. You're always going to want a second set of hands when you're trying to get everything back into the tank.

Vochito... I live in Russellville and have had to move my tank from the fire station to my home before. It is a task but if you are carefull and do not stress the fish you should be alright. If you put your sand in first, add your rock, than SLOWLY add your water over a plate or something. You will probably have to wait till the next day to add your live stock. Just be sure to keep your temps up on your DT and the bucket with your LS. I have to work sat. If it wasn't for that I would be glad to help out. PM me and I'll give you my number if you have any problems.

Thanks !! The guy im getting it from is helpin break it down and load it up... I have 2 people that are suppose to go along to help, and will help me get everything inside. We are planning on removing all the rocks and placing them in the (18) gal. containers and if possible, we are going to try to move it with the sand still in it. The owner has the RO going, making water, as we speak.

My lil bro used to work there too his name is Rob (herby). Be VERY,VERY careful when moving a tank with sand still in it. Many people have broken the bottom out of thier tanks trying this. I would highly advise against it. But if you do GOOOOOOOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why not just get a couple of 5 gal. buckets and do it that way. It's much safer.

Probably going to have to end up putting it in buckets because of having to prop the tank up to protect the fittings in the bottom.... The setup is only 5 months old, and the owner says the sand is pretty clean, so maybe everything wont get nasty.
