Mp40s on 180

Standard 180 (72*24*24), minimal rock work (3 columns, about 110 pounds total) will two mp40s suffice for sps? On on each end?

Can’t afford the 60s, already have the 40s.

My peninsula is 62x24x24 and 2 MP40’s where not enough. I eventually added a maxspect gyre on the other end. If you plan on keeping SPS it will not be enough flow.

I use 2 40’s on one side and a 60 on the other size. I also tried a gyre. Loved the flow but hated the whine. I had the older 250 model.

Lots of variables such as rockscape and types of SPS, but you’ll need something more long term. FWIW, I run 2 MP40 and 2 MP60 in my 220 and now that the colonies are larger, I still have dead spots.

Gyre is the way to go. I got rid of my MP40s because it just wasn’t enough flow in my 180. I have a gyre on each side and 1 in the back facing the barebottom now with 2 seaswirls

I am sure you can make it work but acros away from the good flow will get long skinny growth most likely.

I have 2 mp40s on my 24 inch cube mixed tank on reef crest at 50% For a 180 you would need 4 at least.

I have 4 MP-40s on a 72X36X24. I have enough flow for acropora.

Yes, 2 MP40's will work for SPS. The only issue you will have is that you will have flow only coming from 2 points. I use 2 MP40's on my 225 gal tank, and had them on my 120 gal tank before, and I think the RC is the best program out there. That being said, I also use 2 Gyre 350s on a delayed offset variable speed mode to create even more flow. I am trying to get all the dead areas to prevent detritus settling and to prevent precipitation of Alk. I, also, do not like having to run pumps at their limit as it wears out the motors.

Remember, SPS needs roughly 40x turnover, and 2 will do that. They also like turbulent flow, and 2 pumps will have a hard time doing that on a 6 ft tank.

My tank dimensions are 72x30x24.

Mine is 72 x 30 x 24 and I run 4 MP40's, 2 on each end. Planning on adding another 2 to the back wall just to disrupt the end units.

I love the Ecotechs, but I just cant get the flow to certain areas of the tank and I have 2 60's and a 40. My tank is 8 ft long thou. I would consider doing two 40s on the ends and maybe some other pumps on the back wall somewhere

I use a pair of Tunze 6105s on a 7 foot 240g. That is all. Some say that they are comparable to mp40s, but I think that they are slightly strong and I can point them. Yes, I think that a pair of mp40s are fine for acropora in a tank like that. You don't need as much flow as some people will lead you to believe... once you have a competent amount, I never found that any more did anything except keep the fish skinny. I am not saying that flow does not matter, only that you don't need a metric ton of it.

I have a xf350 gyre. It moves a lot of water, but I don't really care for it with corals. Some complain about longevity and issues, but I have never cleaned mine in probably 4 years and it just works. I hate the linear flow. I would not use it on a tank with acropora full time (it is in a FOWLR that sometimes has corals in it for overflow). I had some red dragon in there and they grew with the flow... same with some A. Austera. In my house, they get too much of a hard time for being unreliable and too much of a good time for being good flow.

My friends tank is 8 foot, runs 2 mp60's and 4 FX330 or 350 gyre, I tried the gyre but didn't like it.

Once the SPS grow into colonies i think it wont be enough unless you have 4 and twp on both ends. My 2 cents.

What about a MP 40 on each end of a 180? I mostly want softies, LPS corals and gorgonian types. I also have a film on the surface, not sure why. When the setup was on the RS 88 gallons there was not scum. Yes, I could create waves. Just replace one of the 40. I do not have a problem with the sand. I want to disturb the surface more. Current seems adequate at this time. Suggestions?
