I was given, as a surprise, a goby yesterday. Im wondering if anyone can tell me about if it has special care needs. It is in a 230 gallon FOWLR aquarium with peaceful fish. I got it yesterday and it hid until today and it's gone from hanging out on rock to swimming fairly actively at times. I feed a combination of flake food, small slow sinking pellets, and frozen chopped and mixed foods (those frozen cubes). Anything special I should be doing for it? I read that they like copepods which I do not have, but can order and place in my refugium if necessary. Ive attached a pic in hopes someone can tell me what kind of goby I have specifically. As always, I appreciate your help! Scott

Hi, to me this looks like a Salarias fasciatus, which belongs to the Blenny family. These fascinating creatures eat algae, and their diet should consist of microalgae found all over the rockwork. I had a similar one (Scartella cristata) that had an amazing personality until it started eating up my Acros... just for information.

I think that if you keep it very well fed and have some luck, it should only feed on algae and leave the corals in peace.

Ahhh. Ok, a blenny. Thanks so much! Ive never had a goby or blenny so just went with what I was told. Anyway, it sounds like it will be easy enough to care for. Appreciate you taking the time!

It's a pleasure! 230 gallons are, in my opinion, more than enough (given that there aren't too many algal competitors). Have fun with your new fish :-)
