Hey all. Over the last few weeks I’ve slowly been adding some new corals to my tank. I’ve had my tank running for about a year now and this is my third build over the last 10 years or so.
I purchased a jawbreaker mushroom about three weeks ago. All has been good over that time. On Friday of last week, I added a Superman Monti frag towards the top of my rock work. I’d had my flow relatively low until I added the monti, which is when I upped the flow slightly to try to make it more accommodating for that frag. I knew the risk in doing that regarding the rest of the coral, but I figured -“F it!” let’s see what happens (which is always how greatness ensues).
So…. I got home from work today, and I saw the jawbreaker awkwardly hanging on to the piece of anemone box that my LFS had cut off which it’d latched onto. I presume it’s unhappy with the flow but now I don’t exactly know the best way to get it to settle down.
I have a “nem protector” that I wasn’t using and so I’ve effectively covered the shroom with that for now, so that it doesn’t meet its doom between my anemones and my power head.

Where im looking for advice…(I know there’s no perfect answer here)….should i
A. leave the nem protector covering the shroom in hopes that it latches back where it is
B. Use the nem protector as a make shift “mushroom box” (add rubble to the bottom and figure out a way to cover the top so it doesn’t fly out). My concern here is prying the rest of the mushroom from what it’s latched onto. I’ve never really handled mushrooms before and I understand they can be very sensitive to handling.
C. Something else?

I know these questions can be annoying bc of the fact that it’s trial and error. I’m just concerned bc of the price of this coral that k really don’t want to mess it up.

Appreciate your help here.

My jaybreakers are in the corners of my tank, for me its the lowest flow and lowest light spot, they reproduce like crazy there.

Thanks for the reply. Did they work their way into those spots on their own or did you strategically place them. If the latter, how did you get them to settle ?

I place them and leave them for a while, if they don't look "happy" I move them. In the pic below, the ones up front were on the opposite side of the tank for the past year and never flourished, in fact they looked just like yours. .So, 2 weeks ago I moved them to this corner and they've noticeably done much better in just 2 weeks.

Just keep moving them till you find their happy spot, I don't want to say they are impossible to kill, but they are very hardy. Good luck

I cut a plastic container in half and added a rock and some rubble to the bottom. Placed the mushroom in there and covered it with the nem protector. It seems to have latched onto the rock but will leave it be for a few weeks to make sure before I start messing with it again.
