Welcome to R2R! There is no better place to be!!

I started with the IM40 (well actually the 30L, long story. Click my build thread if your bored;)). It’s an awesome tank! My equipment list was:

-Used the media & baskets that came with the tank until cycled & fish/corals added. Then used upgraded media baskets with filter floss on one side & Purigen & ChemiPure Elite on the other.
-upgraded pump to Syncra Silent 2
-Ghost skimmer (once cycled), but upgrade to a Tunze 9004 Skimmer (ran in the left chamber.)
-IM Minimax Mid-size Reactor (ran carbon or Phosguard...depended on problem). Ran on the left, chamber next to the skimmer.
-Ecotech MP10wqd x2 (started with 1 & bought another when I addedd SPS corals to the tank).
-started with a Current Marine light, but quickly changed to a Ecotech Radion XR30W with a filter. Probably could have used the XR15w, but was already planning for the future!
-Tunze 3155 ATO
-Apex Classic with WXM, Ph & temp probe
-Cobalt Aquatics Neotherm 150
-Tropic Marin Coral Pro salt

Something very important missing from this list is a quarantine setup. Got lucky from Jan2015 to Sept2018. Anything put in my tank came from 2 sources I trusted. Then in Aug 2018 I bought a coral online, not realizing that coral dip didn’t kill eggs, put it in my display and Velvet wiped out my tank by mid-Sept. I fully believe if I had followed advice from R2R and had a system set up, my fish would still be alive (again, read my build thread if your bored). R2R’s ReefSquad is the best

This was my tank before upgrading to a Reefer 425xl

Best advice I can give..patience, patience & more patience. Read the stickies on R2R, if in doubt ask questions. R2R is really like a big family..always there when you need them!
Want to see some pics :)

I recommend high in blue, low in white and gradually increase white to 20% and Blues at 75%. If you are keeping the kessil- consider a kessil controller which you can control light schedule, colors and intensities.

Welcome aboard! That's a fine looking setup, and I think you're off to a great start. I'll give you my personal take on cycling... For the record, I have no doubt that what I do is absolute overkill, and you don't have to add as much bacteria as I'm going to tell you, in order to have a proper cycle.

BUT! I'm a firm believer in filtration overload, especially when it comes to bacteria, and not just with total population, but with biodiversity as well; the more different species you have in there, the better. Besides which, to me, I would much rather spend a hundred bucks on bacteria, to save a lot of headache (and expense) down the line. So here is what I have always done:

- You already added the Fritz, so that's a good start.
- Add Instant Ocean Bio Spira
- Order Coralline in a Bottle, one of purple, and one of pink. It's a great product, and will also jump-start your beneficial algae growth; plus they bottle it when you place your order, so it comes in fresh and teeming with cultures.
- Add a bottle of Nitro Max Marine, which contains even more species of nitrifying bacteria, along with oxygenating bacteria as well.
- Get a bottle of Dr. Tim's ammonium chloride, and follow the dosing instructions on the bottle. I actually do 1.5x of what they recommend, with everything I add.
- Make sure you have plenty of surface material for the bacteria to colonize. You already have live rock. See if you can add some Marine Pure ceramic plates/balls/cubes/etc., out of sight behind your rock, or wherever you have space in the rear filtration chamber. You can never have too much Marine Pure!

Start feeding the tank ammonia, and wait. Begin testing a couple of days later, and when your ammonia drops to zero, you should be good to go. For myself, I would go overkill here too, and dose the tank with ammonia one more time. Another few days of waiting is a small price to pay. And there you have it! Like I said, probably overkill. lol. However I have personally had great success with doing it this way, and I've ran some pretty heavy bioloads.

Enjoy this awesome hobby, and we're glad to have you here. ;Woot

Hello reefers, what a wonderful hobby and wonderful site. I’m glad to be a part of it. I am new to the hobby and just started an Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 40 gallon aquarium. I am using the Kessil A360we Tuna Blue for lighting. Unfortunately, I have not purchased the Spectral Controller (yet). Although I am going through my cycle (only running 3 days now) I am looking for advice on how to run my lights manually going forward and in the future when I stock. Is it not suggested to run lights manually? As I mentioned I’m new to the hobby and would appreciate some guidance on proper use of lighting for a start.

Here’s my setup so far...

-Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 40
- Custom stand
- Kessil A360WE Controllable LED Aquarium Light - Tuna Blue mounted on gooseneck
- Innovative Marine NUVOSkim DC Protein Skimmer Midsize (not running yet)
-2 Innovative Marine CustomCaddy with PurityPack Filter Media (not in yet running filter sock for now)
- Hydor Koralia Evolution Wave Pump 850 gph (I may replace with something better (thoughts?) all they had at LFS)
- I upgraded stock pump to a Sicce Syncra 2.0

I’m using RODI w saltmix, live sand, dry rock
-Aquatic Life Twist-In 100 GPD 4 stage RO/DI
-Instant Ocean Reef Crystals

Using instant ocean hydrometer for right now
Consistent reading of 1.026

I added Fritz Zyme 9 nitrifying bacteria recommended at LFS ?

I’ve tested water for 3 days with api strips and master test kit. All of my parameters are at zero ammonia nitrites and nitrates. PH I believe is 8.0-8.2 still learning how to use these test kits may upgrade to a Hanna for PH? I plan on letting this run for awhile maybe 1-2 weeks before I turn on protein skimmer and replace filter socks with the upgraded caddy baskets with filter media?

All of this is new to me. I helped my older brother set up a successful saltwater community reef aquarium when I was much younger and now many years later have decided to start my own...I think I'm on the right track so far but maybe not

All criticism, input, advice, etc is welcome

Thank you
