Unfortunately I couldn’t afford a tank that was pre-drilled so I had to go with the Marineland 75 gallon. Trust me I would love to have an aquarium with a sump and a refugium. But unfortunately i use a Fluval FX6, is wat it is. Lol. The biggest thing I did was add a hang on back skimmer. You guys are blessed to have your dreams set up.

Reef Moonshiners !! Couldn’t keep SPS to save my life, till I started RM…now I have around 20 pieces of Acros/Millis encrusting/growing with colors getting better and better.

Swithching to a SynergyReef sump with a large Refugium stuffed with Chaeto/Caulerpa would be a close second for getting my nutrients down.

I got a new light that makes my corals look cool. Unfortunately I am kind of a hack and some of my zoa's are having a tougher time growing cause my nitrates go from 2 ppm - 5 ppm on a weekly basis. Sometimes it could be 10 ppm but I have a hard time decided if it is 5 or 10 cause the shades of pink are so close to each other. My tank is only 10 months old.

I'm a hack.

Yes, I didn't do any maintenance for a little over a month. I heard letting your tank get a little dirty once in a while, can help the coral growth. It worked very well, the zoas, duncans and galaxea had alot of new growth...but so did the algae.

Went back to old school way of doing things, sorta. All my tanks are now skimmer less, consistent 10% water change ever week, all the tanks with sumps only have chemipure, carbon and purigen. Others have the same with HOB filters. All 50w 10k DIY LEDs lights. 50% water change every 6 months. Added several circulation pumps to all tanks. Dose nothing accept live photo and calcium. Also use tap water. Remember K.I.S.S. ? I do and love it! Tanks haven't looked so well in years

I got a bigger tank! has never looked better and everyone is happier.

Roller mat, apex, dose trace elements, and a mortared rock work.

Actually two that made a major positive impact:

1) Tropic Marin All -For-Reef. AMAZING product, single dose majors and traces and the fact it is available as a DIY recipe to save some money is great as well. Up to 12+ml on my 25 lagoon now - it has really helped with both growth and color.

2) keeping pH elevated with CO2 scrubbing. My pH is nearly always around 8.3-8.4 during the photoperiod now, so corals are better able to calcify and put on new (and rapid) growth. My corals have been growing like weeds. I have my CO2 media feed my air intake for my skimmer.

I suspect that my current success is due to both of these things in conjunction with each other. The pics below are abouta year apart and the earlier one is approximately when I began CO2 scrubbing.

FTS-11-7-20.jpg

11-7-20 Great color and good growth. Had already been using AFR for maybe 6 months by then (maybe even longer...)

IFF_8021.jpg

Just last week. Not as good quality of picture. Colors are just as good as the first picture, but growth has been astonishing over the past year. Look at the capricornis, the digitata, the anacropora (was on the opposite side in the top image), and the brains (at least the ones that can be seen now!). The open brain is in jail because the clown keep trying to use it as an nem substitute and has made it retract. It is recovering nicely now. Not sure what to do about the clown. Anyhow... these two things have been responsible for some phenomenal improvements in my tank.

Yes Definitely!
Added a UV - overall tank so much cleaner and just seems healthier - no algae issues - impact was quite rapid - within a week and has been running for about a year now
Also eased up on the Reef Roids / Coral feeding to get Phosphates down as got out of control, corals just as happy as they were before so questioning the value of feeding or at least see value in reduced feeding
Great thread - will be taking some of these tips on - namely reducing use of carbon so I stop stripping out trace elements - adding aminos and switching to kalk reactor not ATO

I’ll take heat for this one… I added an oversized canister filter with inline UV to my redsea nano, replaced the ATO with a better one and stopped using the skimmer 24/7. Plan to add macro algae reactor soon.
