I have had some kind of saltwater aquarium for the past 30+ years. It all started for me when my college roommate, who had a tank with snowflake and zebra eels, handed me "The Marine Aquarium Reference: Systems and Invertebrates" by Martin Moe. I was a chemistry major at the time and I finished that book in no time at all. It was just days later that I was starting my first nitrogen cycle on a 10 gallon tank with an undergravel filter.

Fast forward to 3 years ago and I was at the peak of my reef keeping career. I had a nice system going for about 10 years. The main display tank was 5 feet wide and about 110 gallons. It was plumbed into my garage where I had a large sump and a 20 gallon frag tank. Total volume was probably 150 gallons. Everything was automated. Corals were thriving.

Then we sold our house. We could not find anything we liked at the time, so we got an apartment and kept looking. The apartment had all kinds of crazy rules in their lease regarding the number, size, and total gallons of fish tanks they would allow. I ended up getting a red sea 300XL, a second red sea 300XL stand only, and a Fiji Cube 57 shallow. The Fiji Cube fit perfectly on the 2nd stand, and I plumbed it into the Red Sea 300XL sump. I kept what I could in the move, but had to get rid of so much stuff. Then, seven months later, I found my current home and moved again. Still keeping the 2 tanks and what I could. Between the 2 moves many many many of my corals died :crying-face:.

For the past 3 years I have just been keeping the tanks alive and not really giving them the attention needed. At this point I have some coral, a bunch of fish, and a purple reef lobster that has to be 15+ years old. About 6 months ago I finally decided it was time and I have been planning ever since. I'm never moving again and this will be my dream tank.
I have an 8 foot wall to work with. The garage is too far to plumb to, but there is a 30"x30" closet behind the wall that until the other day had a hot water heater in it. The hot water heater has successfully been moved to the garage and I feel the official start of this build has finally begun.

TLDR;
I'm getting a new tank. It's going to be big.

Today I was able to get the RODI system up and running. I have a couple temporary lines in place till I can plumb to a tank. For now I have RODI ice and water coming out of my refrigerator.

I used a 20 gallon holding tank, it will be nice to have buckets of ro for rinsing.

Lighting

When I was building my current temporary tank setup, I experimented with 2020 extruded aluminum as framework for hanging lights. I built 2 L shaped pieces that would go from the ground to above the tank and over, with a rail connecting the two Ls. This worked great. It was solid, looked sleek, easily moveable, and was cheaper than most commercially available hanging systems. I had a few mounting options printed for the radion xr15s I had, and it was pretty much done.

For the new tank, I want to do the same kind of system....except no legs. I want to mount the rails directly to the wall, and come straight out. I did some math and figured out where on the wall the tank is going, and how high it will be. My first attempt was just a rectangle bolted to 5 beams. The ends were solid but there was significant bowing when I placed several 10lb weights on it at various places. I added 2 cross bars to break the rectangle up into 3 sections. While it was much better, there was still bowing. I then added two 10" pieces going down from the wall at the crossbars and added a 45 degree piece bracing the crossbar to the wall. At this point it should hold several small children.

Now I just need to print some mounts, stay tuned.

I have a pair of Kessil A360W Tuna Blue fixtures that I will try to use in addition to the 4 Radion XR15s I have. The last time I used them was with the goosenecks so I needed to figure out a mounting option.

I bought a pair of “Kessil Full Angle Adapter” to give me some better mounting options.

I designed a mount for the 2020 extruded aluminum that would allow the Kessil adapter to hang.

Came out great, it’s going to work perfectly. I’m happy.

That lighting rack is awesome

tyvm. It's super easy to do. You can order the pieces cut to size from several different websites and amazon too. I think it looks great, super flexible to attached whatever I want, and cheaper than off the shelf light fixtures.

I am probably going to add a 6 foot LED bar to it as well.

And the versatility for future additions I think is great. Seems super easy to add supplemental light in the future.

Looks good, after 4 years in my new house and having a temporary tank setup I just finished building my dream 300g build (I have been dreaming of an 8’ tank for 30+ years and Moe’s book was one of the first I read and is still on my bookshelve). Good luck with everything

The new tank has arrived at the LFS. I am going to have it delivered in 2 parts. Stand and sump will arrive first. I will get it in place and make some additional holes in the wall to plumb a UV in the closet. Once it's in the right spot and level, I will have the tank delivered. The glass is almost 600 lbs and I didnt want to deal with having to move it at all.
