I'm starting planning on a new build with the UNS R90 (White Cabinet), upgrading from a 32-gallon AIO. I am moving my existing HYDROS Launch and XP8 over to be the heart of this build, as I’m looking to control as much as possible through the HYDROS ecosystem.

Here's what I'm thinking about buying. Any feedback would be awesome:

Equipment List:

  • Tank & Stand: UNS R90 System (Purchased - Pending Delivery)
  • Controller: HYDROS Launch (Already Purchased/Delivered)
  • Power: HYDROS XP8 (Already Purchased/Delivered)
  • Main Light: 1x Kessil AP9X with 0-10V control to HYDROS
  • Light Mount: Kessil AP9X Mounting Arm
  • Refugium Light: UNS Mini Refugium Light
  • Return Pump: Sicce Syncra SDC 7.0 (WiFi Cloud Link to HYDROS)
  • Skimmer: Reef Octopus Elite 150-SSS (0-10V control to HYDROS)
  • Fleece Roller: Red Sea ReefMat 500 (with UNS 40mm adapter)
  • UV: Aqua UV 25W Classic (3/4" Barb)
  • Wavemakers: TBD - Considering EcoTech MP40s or AI Nero 5s
  • Heaters: 2x Helio 200W Titanium elements
  • Control Cables: HYDROS 0-10V Quad Cable
  • Lid: Need one
Control Plan: I am installing a HYDROS 1" flow sensor on the main return to monitor total pump output and a 3/4" flow sensor on the line leading to the Aqua UV. The HYDROS will have another temperature sensor and a pH meter.

The Kessil AP9X and Octo Elite Skimmer will both be connected to the Launch via the 0-10V Quad Cable for dimming and speed control through the HYDROS app.

For the aquascape, I'm leaning toward a pre-built structure rather than stacking my own rock to keep the look as clean as possible.

You have definitely checked all of the boxes with quality bits. Work on patience, algae outbreaks and fish disease are the two biggest reasons why people leave the hobby. So do everything you can to manage those. If you are going to use a pre built road structure I would try to find as much used rock rubble that I can buy and put it in the sump.

All the UNS pipes are metric so you may need to pickup a few adapters for the flow meter to fit correctly. Also I’m not for sure the reef mat 500 will fit in the return chamber. If you do get it to work I would love some photos of it!

Sounds like a pretty sick setup!

Just a note, while the 0-10v will work to control the speed of the Reef Octopus, the Kessil AP9X, has a 0-10v OUT for control of THEIR devices, it would not be able to be controlled via HYDROS. Kessil switched to their K-Link (USB) for communication, newer lights do not have 0-10v connection out of the box.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Should have some space to put some rock at the bottom of the refugium or in the skimmer when I take down the 32 tank

Thanks, that may have saved me a headache on the rollermat. I think I'm just gonna go with the 250. I'm going to have to look at that plumbing a little more closely to make sure I can get the flow meters to fit.

Hmm, I originally considered cheaper lights since I'm focussing on fish and a few easy corals, my wife likes the fish to keep her interested. I figured it was worth it to bite the bullet and get the Kessil because it gave me more integration with the Hydros.

Nicd set up. Looking forward to see how your build progresses. Welcome to the UNS club!

That is what I installed in mine. I have since taken them out and use filter socks. I use 2 XR15 and have been happy with those.

@UNS_Brandon - Clear Water Aquarium in San Jose. Like, how much later? I don't want to move my fish over until I have a lid, I think... Although I only have 3 right now
What kind of fish?

When I started I had a 4x2x2 tank, and got a lid for it. I've since upgraded to a 6x2x2, and decided to go sans lid. I don't buy notoriously known jumpers since I do not want a lid.

The lid on the 4 footer was obnoxious enough to deal with, I really didn't like the idea on a 6 footer.... as well as the lid cost me $800, I'm sure it would be 200-400 more for the 6 footer.

Currently, we're down to a cardinal fish and two firefish, plan to go heavier on fish that look cool and are more visible moving around the tank. The firefish hide all the time.

Why did you go back to filter socks? My idea is to try to automate as much of the regular maintenance as possible.

Have you installed the UV yet? I’m interested to know if you needed any adapters and where you got them, I’m researching adding a UV to my R90.

Sweet setup!

Yes, I have installed TMC Titan UV. I purchased mine from American Aquarium Products. I think, but am not sure, they are the distributor. I have had great success with their product.

Pallet Day!

The tank was delivered today and I finally got it set up in the house. The UNS R90 is a beautiful piece of glass and I'm excited to get the plumbing started.

So far, the only two items I've ordered are the Sicce Syncra SDC 7.0 return pump and an Aqua Ultraviolet 25-watt unit. I chose the Sicce over the EcoTech Vectra M2 specifically because it integrates more easily with my HYDROS Launch. I wanted a pump that could talk to my controller natively without needing extra wireless bridges or workarounds.

For the plumbing, I’m planning to run a HYDROS Flow Sensor on the UV side only. I want to be 100% sure I’m hitting that 400 GPH "sweet spot" for parasite control. I’ll just rely on the Sicce’s internal flow estimation for the main return to save some space in the cabinet.

Has anyone else gone with a "single sensor" setup like this on a manifold?
